Beginner & Catch-all

Action

Money at risk on an outcome.

Definition

Action is money at risk on a betting outcome. If you place a bet, you have action on that game, player prop, future, or market. The amount of action is the stake you commit, not the amount you could win.

There is no special formula for action itself. For a negative American odds payout, profit equals:

stake × 100 / odds amount

Worked Example

A bettor puts $55 on Team A at -110.

That $55 is the bettor’s action. If Team A wins, the profit is:

$55 × 100 / 110 = $50

The sportsbook returns the $55 stake plus $50 profit, for a total payout of $105. If Team A loses, the bettor loses the $55 in action.

Why It Matters

Tracking action helps a bettor measure exposure before results arrive. It keeps stake size, payout, and total money at risk separate, which makes bankroll decisions easier to audit.
