Payout
Definition
Payout is the total amount returned on a winning bet: the original stake plus the profit. It is not the same as profit. Profit is what the bet wins; payout is what comes back to the account after the bet settles.
Formula:
payout = stake + profit
For American odds:
At positive odds, profit = stake × (odds / 100).
At negative odds, profit = stake × (100 / absolute odds).
Worked Example
A bettor places $110 on a team at -110 odds.
Profit:
$110 × (100 / 110) = $100
Payout:
$110 stake + $100 profit = $210
If the bet wins, the sportsbook returns $210 total. The bettor’s net gain is $100 because the original $110 stake was already their money.
For positive odds, a $50 bet at +150 earns:
$50 × (150 / 100) = $75 profit
Payout:
$50 + $75 = $125
Why It Matters
Payout helps a bettor separate money returned from money actually won. That makes it easier to compare bet sizes, odds, and expected returns without confusing stake with profit.
