Draft season is the window where fantasy boards move the most and the fastest. Every August brings the same three questions — who is being priced in too early, who is sliding under the radar, and which moves are signal versus noise. That is exactly what our live NFL fantasy rankings are built to answer. The board is ranked from the current player_feature_store projections on every page load, so as new rolling-window projections, depth-chart signals, and preseason participation land, the ranks reprice in real time. This post is the dated version of that board: which names our model is climbing and cooling on this week, and how to read the movement without mistaking a snapshot for a recommendation.
Start with the single most important framing: on any given date, the direction of a move matters more than the exact number. A running back who was RB14 and is RB11 is a player our models believe is building a case. A receiver who was WR7 and is WR9 is fading against the same projection stack — and that tells you something specific about role, usage, or target share, not about talent. Risers the model is moving up
The risers on the current board share a pattern: the feature store is picking up a clearer receiving role or a vacated backfield, and the projected points per game are climbing as a result. These are names worth checking on the live rankings before your next mock.
- Elite pass-catching backs in Zone 1. The backs who double as receivers — the Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs archetypes — hold the sturdiest floors because their projection does not depend on a single rushing script. When a back like that climbs on the board, the model is usually rewarding the receiving floor.
- Year-3 receivers with rising route participation. Receivers whose second-half-of-last-season route share is being treated as the new baseline, not an outlier, tend to be the quiet risers of late July and early August. - Streaming quarterbacks with rushing upside. QBs whose projection includes a real rushing baseline keep climbing in single-QB formats, because their floor does not collapse when a passing script goes quiet. Our QB streaming analysis spells out why.
The scatter above comes straight from our stored nfl_player_weekly projection history — it is the same underlying data that feeds the live board. The backs clustered toward the top are the ones our model is highest on. When you open the rankings and filter to RB, the risers this week sit at the top of that cluster.
Fallers the model is cooling on
The fallers are the more instructive group, because they are where drafters habitually overpay for a name. The model cools on a player for measurable reasons, not vibes:
- Running backs whose rushing share is projected down. A back who loses goal-line or early-down work to a rotation sees his projected points drop even if his talent is unchanged. That is the Zone 2 overpay our ADP value tiers post spends the most time on.
- Veteran receivers whose target share is projected down. An aging wideout whose route share declined in the second half of last season tends to keep sliding through the preseason as the projection stack weights the recent trend more heavily.
- Tight ends outside the top tier. Outside the elite bunch, the points-per-game gap between TE6 and TE12 is small enough that the model flatlines those players against each other — so the ranking moves on role rather than name. Our TE premium strategy reranks the position from scratch.
The bar chart shows the players who have produced the most in a single week in our stored history. When a name on this axis slides in the live board, the model is reading a usage trend, not a highlight-reel ceiling. That distinction is the entire edge in draft season.
How to read the movement on the live board
Three habits keep a rankings update from turning into noise:
- Track direction over one-week noise. A single board move can be a scrape artifact. Look for a name that has been climbing (or fading) across consecutive updates before you act on it.
- Compare against ADP, not against last week. The real money is made where our projection and market ADP disagree, not where a rank changes. Filter the live board for the highest "model above ADP" names — those are the draft-night values.
- Check your scoring format. PPR changes the shape of the board more than any other setting. The live rankings respect the format you select; read this week’s risers and fallers through your own league’s lens.

Position-by-position read
The movement is never uniform across positions, so it helps to read each group on its own terms:
Running backs
The RB board weights receiving floor and goal-line stability most. A back with a locked early-down role and a clear third-down role holds a higher floor projection than a high-ceiling, inconsistent committee member. This is the season where committee splits harden, so the risers tend to be the backs whose role clarity is improving in camp, and the fallers the ones caught in a true three-back rotation. Receivers
The WR board is a target-share story. Receiver ranks move when the projection stack updates route participation, not when highlight plays land. A course-corrected second-year receiver whose usage share is flat can quietly rise past a big name whose target share is eroding. Quarterbacks and tight ends
Single-QB QB ranks are compressed because the point gap between a mid-tier streamer and an early-round QB is narrower than the market believes; rushing floor is the differentiator our model leans on. Tight ends are the opposite — the elite tier is priced for real, and the entire tier below is nearly interchangeable.
