Straight Bet

Single wager on one outcome.

Definition

A straight bet is a single wager on one outcome. It can be a moneyline, point spread, or total, but the ticket has only one selection. If that selection wins, the bet pays according to its odds. If it loses, the stake is lost.

For American odds, payout math is:

Positive odds: profit = stake × (odds / 100)

Negative odds: profit = stake × (100 / |odds|)

Worked Example

A bettor places $110 on the Cowboys -3 at -110 odds. The Cowboys must win by more than 3 points for the bet to win.

If the bet wins:

profit = 110 × (100 / 110) = $100

The sportsbook returns the $110 stake plus $100 profit, for a total payout of $210.

If the Cowboys win by exactly 3, the bet pushes and the $110 stake is returned. If they lose or win by fewer than 4 points, the bet loses.

Why It Matters

Straight bets make it easier to measure one opinion against one price. They help a bettor audit whether a line offers value without adding parlay correlation, extra legs, or harder payout math.
