Definition
A player prop is a bet on one individual player's stat line instead of the final score of a game. Common examples include points, rebounds, assists, passing yards, rushing yards, strikeouts, shots on goal, or made threes. The sportsbook posts a number, and the bettor chooses over or under that number.
For American odds, the implied probability formula is: for negative odds, odds / (odds + 100) using the absolute value; for positive odds, 100 / (odds + 100).
Worked Example
A basketball prop lists Jalen Brunson over 27.5 points at -110. Betting the over means he must score 28 or more points for the wager to win. At -110 odds, a bettor risks $110 to win $100, for a $210 total return if the bet wins.
The implied probability is:
110 / (110 + 100) = 52.38%
So the bettor needs the over to win more than 52.38% of the time before accounting for sportsbook margin and personal projection edge.
Why It Matters
Player props help bettors focus on a specific matchup, role, injury impact, or usage change instead of the full game result. This concept is useful when a bettor can compare a posted stat line against a projection and price the over or under with auditable math.
