Pivot

Swap chalk for lower-owned at similar cost.

Definition

A pivot is a lineup or bet change from a popular pick to a less popular option with a similar price, role, or upside. In DFS, this means moving off “chalk” and choosing a lower-owned player who can score in the same range. There is no required betting formula for a pivot; the value comes from comparing cost, projection, and ownership.

Worked Example

A DFS running back costs $7,200 and is projected for 18 points with 32% expected ownership. Another running back costs $7,100, is projected for 17 points, and has 9% expected ownership. Swapping to the second player is a pivot: the salary and projection are close, but fewer lineups benefit if he outperforms the chalk.

If the chalk scores 11 points and the pivot scores 24, the pivot lineup gains 13 raw points while also passing a large group of lineups that used the popular play.

Why It Matters

A pivot helps when a contest rewards beating many opponents, especially large-field DFS tournaments. It creates practical edge when the lower-owned option has comparable upside and the popular option is overrepresented.
