Definition
Field means the aggregate of opposing lineups or entries a bettor is competing against. In DFS, the field is every other lineup in the contest. In futures or tournament betting, “the field” can also mean every participant not listed individually as a named betting option.
There is no special field formula. The key math is comparison: your lineup or wager must beat enough of the field to justify the entry fee, price, or payout.
Worked Example
A DFS contest has 10,000 entries, a $10 entry fee, and pays the top 20%. If your lineup finishes 1,999th, it beats 8,001 entries and cashes. If it finishes 2,001st, it beats 7,999 entries and misses the payout line.
In a futures market, a book might list Team A at +300, Team B at +450, and “Field” at -110. A $110 bet on Field wins $100 if any team other than Team A or Team B wins.
Why It Matters
Field strength affects how aggressive a bettor should be. In large DFS tournaments, beating the field often requires a lineup with both strong projection and lower duplication risk.
