We pulled 40 live consensus snapshots across 34 games on August 21. The old sample-size guide said more books equals better data. The numbers say that is only half true.
What the live board shows
Most games show zero dispersion. Every book posts the same number.

What changed since the original guide
The old guide used book count as a quality proxy. The data shows that is wrong.
Blue Jays at Yankees had 1 book at -1.5 with zero dispersion (line-0ad6c8e773670fdeb6bc3e5fe2bfa407). Jets at Steelers had 71 books with a 6-point range (line-7bd4a1cf68fa48420e0ea7b5af4d4cc0). Depth does not equal stability — book count and dispersion are independent.
The guide also implied you need hundreds of bets to measure edge. The CLV guide walks through why beating a stable close matters more than beating a noisy one. Dispersion is the faster filter: if the range is wide, the market has not priced the game. You do not need a model to see that — you need the consensus table.
How to use this live
Open the odds page. Sort by dispersion. Ignore games at zero — the market is efficient there. Focus on games above 1.5 points of range. Those are the slates where information is still moving. When the range compresses, the consensus has formed. That is your entry window.
Track your own bets the same way. Log the consensus range at bet time. If you consistently bet into wide ranges, you are guessing. If you bet when ranges are tight and the line moves your way after, you are beating the close. The bet-tracking guide shows the column setup.
See the track record for how we grade lines when real market data exists. Check the odds feed desk for live dispersion on every game.
What would change our mind
A high-dispersion game that compresses to 1 point or less across the same book set within two hours of kickoff. That compression is the market saying we figured it out. Until the range collapses, the midpoint is a guess — not a price.
Bet responsibly — set limits, never chase losses.
Model calibration: predicted vs observed
Predicted win probability bucket vs the empirical win rate inside that bucket on the test set. Points on the y=x reference line are perfectly calibrated; points below mean the model is overconfident in that bucket.
EV per $100 across win rate × odds grid
Expected value of a $100 stake at each combination of true win rate and market odds. Anywhere the cell is positive you have a long-run profitable bet; the magnitude shows how aggressive Kelly will size it.
