Steam moves happen when coordinated sharp action hits multiple books fast enough that the market has to reprice simultaneously. The visible symptom is a multi-book line shift within a narrow time window. The diagnostic challenge is separating real coordinated action from a single sharp bet at one book that causes a cascade of limits and copycat movement.
The anatomy of a genuine steam move
Genuine steam has three characteristics. First, it appears at multiple Tier-1 books (Pinnacle, Circa, DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM) within 30–60 minutes. Second, it moves against the public betting percentage — if 65% of tickets are on the favorite and the line moves toward the underdog, that is sharp action overriding public money. Third, the new price holds or continues in the same direction over the following 12–24 hours.
| Signal | Real steam | Noise / false steam |
|---|---|---|
| Books moving | 3+ Tier-1 books | 1–2 books only |
| Public bet % | Against public side | Follows public side |
| Speed | Under 60 minutes | Hours or days |
| Stability | Line holds or continues | Reverses within 24 hrs |
| Pinnacle action | Pinnacle included | Pinnacle unchanged |
Pinnacle is the key validator because it takes the largest bets and does not restrict sharp players. If Pinnacle does not move, the steam may just be one regional book adjusting its exposure. Pinnacle moving first is the strongest signal.
When to follow steam and when to ignore it
Steam is most useful as a diagnostic, not an entry signal. If you already have a position on the Bills, and steam hits the other direction (moving the line toward the opponent), that is information — your position may be on the wrong side of sharp money. Reduce size or exit. If you have no position, chasing steam after it moves usually means buying a number that has already moved 1–2 points, which erases the value the sharp money identified.
The exception: when you have a reason to believe you identified the same edge before the steam hit. If your model said Bills -3 was the right side, and sharp money moves it to Bills -4, the steam confirms your read rather than creating it. The confirmation can justify sizing up on a pre-existing position. See primetime sharp trends and CLV for how to track whether following steam generates closing-line value.
Building a steam tracker into your process
The minimum viable steam tracker: check line history at two or three tracking sites (Action Network, OddsShark, or book-direct APIs) before games each week. Flag any spread or total that moved more than 1 full point from opener to current. For each flagged game, check the public bet percentage. Moves against heavy public action (>60% on one side but line moving the other way) are the cleanest sharp-action signals. Log these and audit your results versus the line at kickoff — after a season, you will know whether following reverse-line-movement games in your sport generates real CLV.
