The market for the Thursday opener
The Los Angeles Rams host San Francisco at 8:35 p.m. ET, Sep 10, Thursday night. Every book we track has the Rams laying 3.5 at home. The total and the prices move a little from one screen to the next.
| Book | Spread (home, Rams) | Total | Moneyline (home / away) | Last checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pinnacle | −3.5 (−104 / −108) | 48 | −197 / +171 | 4:52 p.m. ET, Sep 7 |
| DraftKings | −3.5 (−108 / −112) | 48.5 | −185 / +154 | 6:07 p.m. ET, Sep 7 |
| Bovada | −3.5 (−115 / −105) | 48 | −200 / +170 | 6:07 p.m. ET, Sep 7 |
Our published pick disagrees with the market by 2.5 points
Three live picks on this game. On the spread we want the home side, the Rams, at 6 points rather than the market's 3.5, which is a 2.5-point edge, at a confidence of 0.754. On the total we want the over at 48.5. Our number there is 50.29, a 1.79-point edge, confidence 0.616.
On the moneyline we want the home side again. Our number is 0.66, a 66% implied win chance, a 0.16 edge, confidence 0.661. That total pick lands between the other two on confidence, and a middling-confidence total is not the same instrument as the spread pick beside it. So read the spread first.
Our number, 6 points for the Rams, is 2.5 points steeper than the market's 3.5, in the Rams' favor, and that gap is the whole of the published 2.5-point edge.
Under that published number sit 38 separate models on this game's spread. Thirty-five of them take San Francisco against the market line. 3 take the Rams. The numbers themselves run from −15.3824 up to 6, with most of the pile between 0 and 3.2.
We cannot confirm that every one of those models uses the same plus-minus convention as the published pick above, so each set is reported exactly as it stands instead of being forced into one number.
The 49ers with a Week 1 fantasy number, and the one without one
Six San Francisco skill players clear eight projected points on the Week 1 projection board, PPR scoring. Brandon Aiyuk is not on that board at all, so he carries no figure here and no rank, whatever his draft slot says about demand.
| Player | Team | Pos | Week 1 projected pts (PPR) | Board rank | ADP | Status on the board |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Christian McCaffrey | SF | RB | 18.38 | 3 | 5.8 | Questionable |
| Brock Purdy | SF | QB | 15.47 | 20 | 84 | no flag |
| Mike Evans | SF | WR | 10.64 | 36 | 56.6 | Questionable |
| De'Zhaun Stribling | SF | WR | 9.58 | 47 | 124.1 | Questionable |
| Deebo Samuel | SF | WR | 8.88 | 55 | 114.1 | no flag |
| George Kittle | SF | TE | 8.36 | 18 | 89.4 | Questionable |
George Kittle is the story and not the way this hub has been telling it. The board files him eighteenth among tight ends on 8.36 projected points, the lowest figure of the six above, and he is drafted 89th. Three San Francisco receivers come back ahead of him. Christian McCaffrey is still the team, third among running backs on 18.38, and he is flagged questionable, as is Kittle.
Brock Purdy is twentieth among quarterbacks on 15.47. That is a starter. It is not a draft pick worth reaching for. Four of these six carry a flag into a Thursday game, which is the sort of thing that decides a lineup faster than any of the numbers beside them.
What we do not have on props this week
Our player-prop consensus, pulled at 5:22 p.m. ET, Sep 7, covers 212 lines across the slate. Not one of them is on a San Francisco player. That is a hole in what we hold this week rather than a fact about the 49ers, and it means any prop talk about McCaffrey, Purdy, Kittle or Aiyuk for this opener has to come from somewhere we are not citing.
Reading the two sides together
The betting half and the fantasy half of this game answer different questions off different data, and neither one settles the other. The published spread pick wants more than the market's 3.5 for the Rams. The projection board says San Francisco has one genuinely good fantasy player, a serviceable quarterback and a tight end it does not rate. Both are checkable today, on the boards linked below, without waiting for a final score to tell you who was right.
What the Number Says
Our number likes the Rams more than the books do, by a real 2.5 points on the spread, and that is the lean worth carrying into Thursday. Edge there means our number less the market's. On offense the news is Kittle going the other way: eighteenth among tight ends and drafted 89th, which is a price for a reputation. McCaffrey is what everyone expects and is flagged questionable.
Aiyuk is not on the board at all. Watch Thursday's status on McCaffrey and Kittle, and check the market again before kickoff in case the spread moves off 3.5. Our full Week 1 picks board, this game's spread, total and moneyline included, is at /picks/nfl. The three-book market is at /odds.
