Hey, welcome into it, baby. Monday morning, Locked On Vols. Fall Camp is over. Mock Game Week is here. We are a week away from being in Game Week. Is that excited? Like, really, truly. This is the last week of the off season. Think about that. This is the last week of the off season. And then we're in Game Week. How exciting is that? Overall, camp thoughts coming up in segment number three. That's my take on last couple of weeks for Tennessee fall camp. Because again, fall camp is pretty much over as we enter into mock game week as college football community. Line of scrimmage stock in segment number three as well. Defense shows out. We'll talk about that in segment number three. A lot of quarterback conversation in segments one and two. And two, you know, what Josh Heupel said about the quarterbacks not being live, but knowing kind of what they could do with their legs in a given play. Quarterback operation on as clean as what it needs to. Overall scrimmage notes. But first here, the quarterback timeline. If you didn't catch my bonus show that I put out on Saturday afternoon after the scrimmage and based on things that I've heard and things that were told to me about the scrimmage out there, and of course all the reports that were out there shortly thereafter about what would happen in the scrimmage, we were just kind of collecting some notes and giving credit where credit was due and bringing information that I had to the table that I was told and all that. Okay. Sound like again, we'll get into more of that in segment number two, but it sounded like the defense had a better day. The offense, you know, struggled a little bit. The quarterbacks weren't as effective as they were. You know, Faizon wasn't as effective. Let me rephrase this. Faizon was the better quarterback. Okay. Might not have been effective down the field like he was in scrimmage number one, but still made plays, made plays a lot with his feet. Okay. But the defense was the story of the day. Okay. And we can go back and check that out from over the weekend. But again, I'll talk about that more in segment number two, the scrimmage two takeaways. But again, Faizon Brandon was the better quarterback. It was told to me, again, the first thing that I asked or the first thing that the person told me when we spoke out for the scrimmage, okay? Same as last week. This is a different person, mind you, okay? Same as last week. I said, you know, how they look, da-da-da-da, quarterbacks, you know, offensive line, all this type of quarterbacks, and you know, good scrimmage, Faizon better again. Okay? Faizon just looked better. Faizon, the offense probably moved better with Faizon out there. Faizon just looked better again. He was the more effective quarterback. Faizon Brandon did turn the football over one time. Good play by TJ Metcalf, I heard. That was, I think it was later in the scrimmage, down the field. Good play by TJ Metcalf. George MacIntyre had a pick six, was told by Dejuan Lane, the safety, so that's good to hear. George MacIntyre probably could have had another pick six, but it was a drop by Trepo T, but Trepo T had a good scrimmage. Again, I think that, you know, George did some things okay, but overall it was kind of his last opportunity to go back and fight back in this race and give Josh Heupel pause in terms of who he's ultimately gonna name. But even though Faizon didn't have his best day on Saturday, he was still better and he still made more plays and he made plays with his legs, I was told. And we'll hear Josh Heupel talk about that more in segment number two, about hey, the quarterbacks aren't alive, so how do you know they were gonna be more effective with the runs, right? Because they can't really touch the quarterbacks. I was told by someone in attendance and his legs would have been a big story line if that was a real game, okay? And is that because pressure was getting to the offensive line and to George and Faizon, and Faizon, instead of maybe working the pocket a little bit, I don't know, I didn't see, I'm just thinking here, he just kind of tucked in a run and ran away quickly, right? I mean, it's a young quarterback. I think we'll see some of that this year, right? As you learn to work the pocket and hang in there, and hang in there, and hang in there, and wait for your guy to make his break on the stem route and then throw that ball in that tight window, I think we'll see him or George or whoever. Him, again, I think it's going to be him, George MacIntyre. Gosh, sorry, Faizon Brandon. I think it's going to be Faizon. Maybe we'll see him tuck in and run a little quickly this year, you know, in those situations, but I think that's normal. I think that's what young quarterbacks do. But again, for the second straight scrimmage, Faizon Brandon has been the more effective quarterback. For the second straight scrimmage, Faizon Brandon has made more plays. All camp long, Faizon has been solid. George has been good. George has made some plays. George throws the football very well. But getting the football out, and more so than anything, I just think in the test, right? In the pop quiz, not the pop quiz, it's the quiz, it's the test, the showcases, Saturday scrimmages the last two weeks. Who makes more plays? Faizon, I was told, made the more plays, especially down the field, explosive plays. So, what did that mean for his short and intermediate passing game? I don't know. You know, we'll see. I mean, when we're out there watching routes on air, he looks fine doing that. But I think he's very comfortable throwing the football down the field. But my point is, Faizon made more plays in fall camp than George MacIntyre did. So my question is, when is the time, what's the timeline look like for a quarterback announcement? Okay. I'm assuming, as I said on the show over the weekend, if you went back and watched that or listened to that, I would be floored if QB1 was not Faizon Brandon at this point. That does not mean that both those guys won't play against Furman. Again, we'll talk about this more here in a moment. I don't know if Josh Heupel would rotate and play both of those guys with the first team. I don't know. I've never been in that camp, but it is Furman. So maybe, I don't know. We'll see. But I would be absolutely floored at this point if Faizon Brandon was not Tennessee's starting quarterback. What did Josh Heupel have to say about the timeline, when he could announce, and what that looks like over the next couple of days? Here's Josh Heupel after the scrimmage on Saturday about the timeline for announcing his quarterback. You evaluate where they're at, who's earned it, and what you think is best holistically for that position group in the buildup and in the football team. I don't know if there's any advantage necessarily. You know, time on task, timing with the wide receivers, tight ends, that type of thing can be an advantage. Those guys have both gotten a bunch of work with that first group. I think it's different every single year. At the end of the day, you look at where they're at, where we're at, and what's best for the football team. Josh Heupel on what goes into naming a starting quarterback, kind of what that looks like. And he's done it several different ways. I keep saying that I thought it was the Monday of Mott Game Week in 2021 that he was going to name Joe Milton over Hendon Hooker. But the more I talk with people and maybe I was misremembering, I think that was actually the Monday of Game Week. It's kind of surprising, right? He did Joey Aguilar on the Sunday night after scrimmage number two last year. But in talking with some people yesterday and I mean I flat out said hey man I'm getting prepared for my Monday Locked On Vols show and I'm going to start recording here a little bit and I just don't want to be severely out of dates and have to go back and redo a bunch of stuff. Do you anticipate Josh Heupel making a quarterback announcement today, which was like on Sunday? And my person that I spoke to said I don't know, probably not because the players had Sunday off. So it's not like they had meetings or anything. I think the Sunday last year when it was announced on social media and they sent out a statement and all that that the Joey Aguilar was going to be QB1. I think that was a day where the players had meetings and they came in there and he was able to talk to all those guys. So as the day went on on Sunday, I assumed that it wasn't going to happen on Sunday. And here we are on Monday. Josh Heupel, because it's Mott Game Week, you're doing everything like a normal game week would be. That means Josh Heupel is going to be with the media at 1230 today. Does Josh Heupel make a quarterback one announcement today? If it's not today, then it's next Monday, right? Or you would assume that because that's the next time he will speak to us. Unless maybe he does it on the Mike Keith Show or something. I don't know. I don't know. Maybe we'll have to see. If it's not today, then the next target date you would think to the media would be next Monday at 1230 on game week. Kind of like when evidently he announced Joe Milton over Hinden Hooker back in 2021. He's done it in different ways. He went to game week a couple of different times when he was at UCF. Again, he announced via statement from the university on a Sunday night last year for Joey Aguilar. There was no need for an announcement for Joe Milton in 2023 or Nico Imaliava in 2024 or Hinden Hooker in 2022. Those were givens, right? So the fact that no announcement was made yesterday. We'll see if one is made today to the media at 1230. And if not today, the last chance I would assume would be next Monday at 1230. Because I don't think you're going to go out there and we're just going to wait to see who runs out there first, right? I think there has to be an announcement kind of made. So again, we'll see what happens. It's an era to where you can do it on social media. It's an era to where Mike Keith has a ton of... I don't know if those have started yet. I'm not sure when those started. I do apologize. Maybe he joins the Mike Keith Show if that gets going this week at some point. Time to make that announcement if it's not today. So we'll see what happens. But I want to make this abundantly clear. I would be very surprised, very surprised if George MacIntyre were to be QB1. I think it's Faizon Brandon. I think he's earned it. I think he's gone out there and taken it. And I think Tennessee is going to roll with Faizon Brandon as QB1. When that announcement comes, could it be today at 1230 when Josh Heupel meets with the media? We will see. Just a couple more hours to figure that out, right? Or maybe you're listening to this after Josh Heupel spoke to the media. Maybe it's already announced. Who knows? Maybe it's coming up here in a couple of minutes by the time you watch or listen to this. We'll see. Josh Heupel speaking to the media later today at 1230 on a Monday. What about the scrimmage overall? What about the quarterbacks in terms of operation? The quarterback's running, Faizon Brandon running the football, all that more. Scrimmage number 2 is in the books, but that means fall camp has come to a close because now we move into mock game week. Mock game week where Josh Heupel, his assistant coaches, all the football players, will do everything this week like they will on a game week, which means Monday is typically an off day, excuse me, Sunday is an off day. Monday they come in, they watch the tape, they do some game playing and all that. They do lifting and all that. And then Josh Heupel will meet with the media at 1230 and some players will meet with the media shortly there after that. On Tuesdays it's a practice day, players meet with the media. On Wednesday it's a practice day, Josh Heupel does the SEC teleconference, okay. On Thursday it is an accelerated walk through day as they kind of call it. And there's no media. On Friday it's a walk through travel day and all that. I mean they're going to do everything this week like they would next week, you know, before next week is, you know, live bullets flying. So Fall Camp is over. Fall Camp is over and we are just waiting on that announcement for QB1 for the Tennessee Volunteers. All right, so what about scrimmage number two? How did Tennessee perform out on Shields Walkins Field Saturday morning? Josh Heupel met with the media here where his opening remarks about scrimmage number two. Good second scrimmage, a bunch of situational work, crowd noise like you're on the road, a lot of mechanics, communication, things that did well, and some things that offensively and particularly learned throughout the course of it. Got to continue to get better at that. But all in all, good work. I thought defensively did a good job, created a couple of turnovers, played assignment sound, and offensively didn't play as clean as we need to. Some of that was communication, but some really positive things there too. Yeah, no doubt. I mean, the story coming out of scrimmage too was the defense. And something I've always learned from Brent Hubbs, he says it every single year, and he's always right. Like, it's never as good as it seems, it's never as bad as it seems. It's always somewhere in the middle, right? Like, the talk coming out of scrimmage number one was, all the offense, all the explosiveness, oh my gosh, like, defense can't tackle. The run fits are awful. Oh my gosh, the defense is awful, right? And then you flip it to Saturday, and it was like, defense had a day. Defense created turnovers. Defense did a great job. Man, that offense is terrible. Oh my gosh, are you kidding me? You're gonna roll in here with a five-star freshman? He's gonna be awful? Oh my gosh, Tennessee can't do anything offensively. Are you serious? You're six, you're six, you're six, right? Like, fan, short for fanatic, make the t-shirt. Literally, that's what we do. Not just at Tennessee, that is just anywhere you look, right? You can be a fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Tennessee Volunteers, the Indianapolis Colts, the Seattle Storm, whatever, right? Like, you can be a fan of whoever. That you'll fan, that's what you do. That's what we do. But it's always somewhere in the middle. And that's all the, I say the catch 22 all the time, right? Because when one part of your team does well, another part of your team is not doing well in intrasquad scrimmages. So, you know, it's time to go play somebody else. It's time to go hit somebody else, right? But the defense was the story of the day. The defense came alive and made some plays. We'll get into that more in segment number three. Something that was mentioned to me, though, is how effective Faizon Brandon was with his legs and how if this was a real game, this would have been a big time story line. But, you know, obviously he's wearing a red non-contact jersey. George MacIntyre is wearing a red non-contact jersey. So anytime somebody gets near them, they're going to blow it dead, right? Because you don't want to take any chances of, you know, hurting your quarterback, obviously. So how can you as a coach, coaches, evaluators, tell when his legs would have been a big time factor in a scrimmage like yesterday when there was some tackling, right? Not for any quarterbacks, but a lot of it was thud as well. Here's what Josh Heupel had to say about quarterbacks running and quarterbacks not being live in that respect, but how they can still get a lot out of it. No, they're not live. You know, they're protected in that way. But you can see their ability to manipulate and work in the pocket. You can see their ball security in the pocket, out of the pocket. Extended plays, you get a chance to see their decision making down the field. You know, if it's not open, their ability to tuck it and gain positive yards and put you in the right situation. So it's not realistic in game day as far as the tackle being made, but you can see all those other things before you get to game day. Yeah, if it was still Faizon Brandon, you know, would have had a day on the ground, like if they were keeping stats and we were up there in the media, like some of the big talking points post game would have been like, oh, Faizon Brandon running, Faizon Brandon running. And going back to what I was saying in segment number one, I'm curious if that's going to be a theme if he is the guy, which I assume he will be at this point. But even if it was George, right, like young quarterbacks, inexperienced quarterbacks, when you feel pressure, as you learn to kind of navigate the pocket and sidestep and step up and kind of do all the different things to stay in the pocket and give your wide receivers more time to get to their break so you can deliver the football down the field, as you learn and grow in that aspect of the game, and it's not going to be perfect day one, right? You hope that you make strides in that regard in every part of the game throughout the offense and the system throughout the season. But do young quarterbacks tuck in and run? Like, you know, is rushing going to be a big part of young quarterbacks' game in the early part of their career here this year? I don't know, I'm intrigued to see kind of what that looks like, but if so, and even if later on in their career, when you're comfortable in the pocket and dealing with pressure and all that, and you still use your legs, it's a difference maker. Like, Faizon's going to be a difference maker with his legs. In the red zone, Tennessee loves to run the quarterback. Did it a little bit with Joey Aguilar, Mississippi State comes to mind, one that, you know, tied the football game with that 12-person LQB sweep to the short side of the field. Loved to run Hendon in those situations. Thought they should have run Joe in those situations, but they didn't. I'm curious if they'll use Faizon in that type of role, right? Because he can do it, and they love to run the quarterbacks in short yardage situations. Pick and choose, right? Pick and choose the battles when you want to run your quarterback. Okay, so that's what Josh Heupel said about quarterbacks not being alive in that perspective. But also, what else went into, I don't want to say struggle bus, but I want to say the offense was not as clean, the offense was not as effective in scrimmage 2 like it was in scrimmage number 1. There were penalties, some holding penalties, there were some procedural penalties, some pre-snap recognition, all that and more. What did Josh Heupel have to say about that? Whereas, you know, for me, it's not like, it's not doomsday, right? Like, it's not doomsday, but you want to be cleaner in scrimmage 2 than you were in scrimmage number 1, right? And that wasn't the case this year. That wasn't the case in fall camp. That wasn't the case, because Tennessee wasn't offensively as clean from an operation standpoint as it was the week before. What did Josh Heupel have to say about that? Throughout the course of training camp, have continued to get better at that. Today was not our best day. That's not just the quarterback, some moving pieces, you know, offensive line, wide receivers, all that. So we still got grounded. We got to continue to chew up here before we get to kickoff. Again, it's not, he's right. It's not just quarterback. I wasn't there. I didn't see what these were. I know that they had a couple of holding penalties for sure, but we're talking procedural pre-snap, right? Wide receiver could be covered up on the line, right? And you're not checking with the, you're not checking with the official to that far side, right? Like you got to step back, you got to get off the line because there can only be so many men on the line. Same thing, you know, with multiple tight end sets or whatever, one of those tight ends has got to be off the line. Like those can be procedural penalties, false starts or procedural penalties, stuff like that. Too many men in the backfield or, you know, stuff like that. So, it's not always just on the quarterback, but I'm curious to know kind of what all those look like. Certainly, that's not necessarily what you want to hear, but again, preseason is, I wrote in the comment section on Saturday, like, it's preseason, it's never going to be clean, right? This is the time to kind of work through those kinks and all that. So, all right, defense kind of won the day in scrimmage number two. Who stood out? How did the defense win the day in scrimmage number two? We'll come back, we'll discuss a lot more of those right here on your Monday Locked On Vols. You know, Tennessee, Tennessee. The Braves played at Yankee Stadium a couple weeks ago. Yankee Stadium, the Tories, that short porch out there in right field. All right, segment number three here of a Monday show timeline. Quarterback, when could a quarterback one be announced? Is it George MacIntyre? Is it Faizon Brandon? I believe it's going to be Faizon Brandon. As I said in Saturday's show at this point, I would be floored. I would be stunned if it's not Faizon Brandon who is Tennessee's quarterback. I think that's the way it's going to go. But when will an announcement be made? Could be today at 1230 when Josh Heupel meets with the media. It was not yesterday on a Sunday like when Joey Aguilar was announced last year on that Sunday following scrimmage number two. So we will wait and see. Maybe it's today at 1230. So we'll certainly have coverage here on Locked On Vols if an announcement is made at 1230. I can promise you that. Okay, so defense, defense, defense. Defense won the day. Defensive line showed up, was told that Xavier Gilliam showed up. Tyree Weathersby showed out. I was told that Xavier Gilliam looked really, really mean out there. I mean, that was one that when I spoke to somebody after the scrimmage, they pointed him out specifically and said, man, he's going to be a stud. He's going to be really good. I was like, well, he had a really good offseason. He was kind of the player of spring camp, if you remember a couple months ago. But he's had a good fall camp as well. TJ Metcalf made a great pick. Also, shout out to Tevis Metcalf. Happy birthday. He had a birthday over the weekend. So a big shout out to Tevis' younger brother, who I was told played pretty well in the scrimmage too, at the star position. But TJ Metcalf made a pick. That was really nice. Dejuan Lane had a pick six, which is great. You know, Idris Farouk, you're going to miss him this year. But the safety play continues to be the talk of the defense. Like I think the safety play is going to be really good this year. And I can't wait to watch those guys go. Depth is a concern because you lost Idris Farouk, Dejuan was a starter and Lane who comes from Penn State knows the system, knows Knowles and Anthony Poindexter in the system and all that. He's now a starter. You feel good about that. But now the depth is kind of taking a hit. So I'm concerned about the depth. But again, in the era of the transfer portal and NIL and all that, it's hard to find some good depth anywhere across college football, honestly, to be completely honest. But anyway, Metcalf had a pick in Saturday's game, Saturday scrimmage. Lane had a pick six, I was told. I don't know who had the other pick, but I'm pretty sure there was another interception. Anyway, Trey Poteet, I was told, could have had a pick six. He dropped a George MacIntyre, I believe it was a slant. But yeah, he dropped it and it could have been a walk-in pick six, I was told. Now, the pick six was thrown by George MacIntyre. Metcalf's interception came out of the hands of Faizon Brandon. I heard it was a really good play down the field. So, Gilliam showed out, Weathersby had a good day. I was told the first new defense just looked really good. Pass rush flashed, which is what you want to hear for sure. Sounds like Josh Heupel was pleased with the tackling, was pleased with how they tackled when they tackled in those situations on the day. Sounds like with Faizon's running in the scrimmage, the contain could have been an issue, which makes a whole lot of sense. Those ends, those linebackers, even those defensive backs, got to set the edge, force things back inside, okay? I think that's all I have on the defense. But it sounds like defense had a good day. The Empire strikes back, the defense had a good day. That was really, really good to hear. A lot of scrimmage. How does Josh Heupel believe the line of scrimmage played offensively and defensively? And I'll give my thoughts after that. The line of scrimmage was asked to Josh Heupel. Post scrimmage, this is what he had to say. Some positives on both sides of it. During the course of it, I thought the D-line was able to apply some pressure throughout the course of the scrimmage. Some of that was the protection. Some of it was where we're at in the protection at quarterback as well. Offensively, I thought there were some things that were really good in the run game, not as consistent as you need to be. You know, there were live parts of the scrimmage and then some thud plays as well. I heard that the defensive line had a good day, which is good, and the offensive line struggled a point in times. I still heard that Tennessee was able to run the football, maybe not as well as scrimmage number one, but Tennessee's been able to run the football very well over the course of fall camp. That's gonna be a real good point for Tennessee this year, is running the football with the Sean Bishop and Jayvon Gordon and of course Juan Morris. All three of those guys who I think will play. Of course, Bishop's gonna be your workhorse. Justin Baker, I think, has had a great camp. Gosh, he could play. He can play somewhere. It's just gonna be tough to find Curies here at Tennessee, to be honest with you. But I was told a point in times of the offensive line was not as effective as it was in scrimmage number one. You know, again, pass rush flashed, flushing Faizon out of the pockets, all that type of stuff. I mean, the pressure's got to come from somewhere. Again, catch 22, right? You know, you want to hear the defensive line had a good day. It's like, oh my gosh, you know, Glenn LRB's awful. You know, you're sick. So like, it's time to play somebody else. It's practice. That stuff happens, and iron sharpens iron, right? That's what you want as a football fan and more than anything as a football coach. So going back to what I said in scrimmage number two and something I learned from Brent Hubbs, like it's never as good as it feels and it's never as bad as it feels. I sometimes have what I think in recording these shows, just terrible shows and I'll be like, my dad will be like, hey man, caught your show today. I'm like, oh gosh, it was awful. He's like, no, I didn't think it was awful. But I mean, you're my dad, you gotta say that. But I'll be talking to one of my buddies and he likes to give me crap all the time. Like, yeah, that was a really bad show today. He's like, oh, I didn't think it was anything. So I'll go back and listen and I'm like, wasn't that bad, dude? Like, you're your own biggest critique. As a fan, you're going to critique your team way more than anybody else. Like, it might feel like you won't critique your team way more than the national media, but you will, right? Because you know the warts, you know the good things, you know the good places on the roster, but you also know the sports on the roster and the players on the roster that could give Tennessee some issues, right? That's just kind of nature of the beast. But I mean, it was good to hear that the defense had a better day. It was real good to hear, to be honest with you. Josh Heupel was asked about wide receiver number three. He literally didn't say anything. Josh Heupel was asked about tackling. It seemed like he was pleased with it. I asked about run fits, stopping the run. He gave me like a ten second answer, and somebody in the comments the other day told me that I need to quit B-Wording about complaining, but you know the B-Word there about coaches not saying anything in press conferences and it's not what I'm doing. Josh Heupel doesn't tell you anything. You know, he said no coach ever does that. No, that's actually false. Kirby Smart tells you a lot. Okay. Lane Kiffin tells you a lot. John Somerall tells you a lot. What's his name? Eli Drinkwitz tells you a lot. Like some coaches don't tell you anything. Nick Saban doesn't tell you anything. Josh Heupel doesn't tell you anything. That's okay. You're not mandated to tell the media anything, you know. We appreciate you when you do, but that's just how it is. Josh Heupel comes into a shell in preseason. He's not going to air during the season. He's not going to behind the microphone. He's not going to tell you anything. And that's fine. That's how he was on Saturday when talking about some of these other things. Specifically, you know, wide receiver three, tackling offensive line, stuff like that.
