Where the 2026 dead zone actually sits

We pulled every running back with an auction price whose average draft pick lands between 18 and 70. Next to each name sits the board's Week 1 projection, where that puts him among running backs, and the dollar you're paying per projected point. The full board, all positions, sits at /fantasy/nfl/rankings.

Eighteen backs. Read the last column top to bottom, because that is the whole article. It starts at $2.38 and finishes under a dollar.

What thirty dollars buys you across the band

Barkley projects 17.66. Four rounds later, on a board that ranks him twenty-ninth among running backs, Tony Pollard comes back at 11.54. Six points apart. The prices are $40 and $10.

Nobody in your league says that out loud, because the two names don't sound six points apart. They sound like a first-rounder and a bench guy.

Kenneth Walker is the sharpest version. He costs $35, third-most in the band behind Barkley's $40 and Jeanty's $36, and lands fifteenth at his position on the board. That is $2.38 a point, the most expensive point down here and pricier than Barkley's. I got this wrong on my first pass and had him next to Jeanty in my head all week, because they go in the same round.

They do not cost the same thing per point at all. Jeanty is $1.99. Our regression-candidate board runs the same comparison using draft order instead of dollars.

The three cheapest points in the band

Rhamondre Stevenson at $12 is the best price on the page. The board has him seventeenth among running backs at 14.10. Seven backs in this band cost more than twice his $12, and his projection beats exactly one of them, Kyren Williams at 13.67. The other six do project higher, and the cheapest point among them is Javonte Williams at $1.64.

Eighty-five cents a point. Tony Pollard at $10 comes in at 87 cents on an 11.54 projection, and Jaylen Warren at $12 is 95 cents on 12.62.

One name doesn't belong in that math. TreVeyon Henderson costs $11 and the board gives him 0.01, which makes the division meaningless and I'm not printing a number for it. A near-zero says the board is not projecting Week 1 work for him. It does not say why, and I would go read New England's depth chart before spending eleven dollars to find out.

What to do with the band in your own draft

Set a ceiling per point before the room gets loud, and hold it. Anything over $2.00 a point in this band needs a reason you can say in one sentence. Under $1.00 is where I want two of my roster spots. Our zero-RB draft plan lays out how to build around buying backs late at exactly these prices.

If you would rather pay up at the top and insure it, the handcuff strategy guide covers the cheaper half of that decision.

Check this board again once real Week 1 snaps are in. Compare the cheap end against the running back tiers and Sunday's published Week 1 picks before you build a trade or a lineup around any of them.

The Receipts Drawer

The number: 85 cents. That is Rhamondre Stevenson, $12 against a 14.10 projection, seventeenth at the position, the cheapest real point in the pick-18-to-70 band. Kenneth Walker sits at the other end at $2.38, and both of them go inside four rounds of each other. Where this breaks: New England splits that backfield and the board is describing a role Stevenson only half owns, which is exactly the risk a $12 price is already telling you about.

Watch the first-half carry split in New England on Sunday. At the table, my ceiling is $16 on Stevenson and I let Walker go past $30 without me.

Frequently asked questions

What is the running back dead zone in 2026 fantasy football?
It is the stretch of the draft from an average pick of 18 down to about 70, roughly a $40-to-$10 auction band. The name is about price, not talent. Across those eighteen backs the auction cost falls by thirty dollars while the Week 1 projections fall by about six points, so what you are really buying changes far more than who you are buying.
Which 2026 dead zone running backs are the best value?
By dollars per projected point, Rhamondre Stevenson at $12 is the cheapest real number in the band at 85 cents a point, on a projection of 14.10 and a board rank of seventeenth. Tony Pollard at $10 is 87 cents and Jaylen Warren at $12 is 95 cents. All three sit at the cheap end of the price list and in the top half of the position on the board.
Which dead zone running backs cost the most per projected point?
Kenneth Walker at $35 is the most expensive point in the band at $2.38, with a board rank of fifteenth at the position. Saquon Barkley at $40 is $2.27 and Kyren Williams at $28 is $2.05. Those are the three prices that need a reason beyond the name.
Do any dead zone running backs still have no Week 1 projection?
No. Every back in the band carries a Week 1 number on the board. This article previously said six of them were blank, and that was wrong. The one to treat carefully is TreVeyon Henderson, whose board figure is 0.01. That is the board declining to project Week 1 work for him rather than a low opinion of the player. He is tagged Questionable there, one slot behind the starter.
Should I just avoid the dead zone entirely?
No, but set a ceiling per projected point before the room gets loud. Above $2.00 a point you want a reason you can say in one sentence. Below $1.00 is where two of your roster spots should come from, and in this band that means the cheap end of the price list rather than the cheap end of name recognition.
