What two outlets confirm about the record
CBS Sports reports the San Francisco 49ers will travel 38,105 miles across the 2026 regular season, an NFL record. The same report has them crossing 58 time zones, past the Los Angeles Chargers' old mark of 42 (cbssports.com). NBC Sports Bay Area put the total above 38,000 round-trip miles on its own count, tied to the international games in Australia and Mexico (nbcsportsbayarea.com). Two legs do most of the damage.
The opener in Melbourne against the Los Angeles Rams runs roughly 7,850 miles. The Week 11 game in Mexico City, designated a Minnesota Vikings home game, sits roughly 2,200 miles from San Francisco.

The Melbourne leg is a live line right now
That Melbourne opener is a live line on our board right now. San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Rams, Thursday, Sep 10 at 8:35 p.m. ET. Our board keeps the Rams as the designated home team, which is how the league schedules its international series.
A club keeps its home tag even when the game is nowhere near its own stadium. All three books price it the same way.
| Book | Spread (Los Angeles) | Home/Away price | Total | Over/Under price | Moneyline (LA/SF) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pinnacle | -3.5 | -104 / -108 | 48 | -111 / -105 | -197 / +171 |
| DraftKings | -3.5 | -108 / -112 | 48.5 | -105 / -115 | -185 / +154 |
| Bovada | -3.5 | -115 / -105 | 48 | -115 / -105 | -200 / +170 |
A 3.5-point favorite on a designated home team is a nothing number on a normal week. It is also the number posted for a team that just flew roughly 7,850 miles across a dozen time zones to get to the stadium. If you were waiting for the board to charge somebody for that, it never did.
What the market number does not show
Nothing in the 3.5-point spread reads like an added discount. Neither does the total, 48 at Pinnacle and Bovada against 48.5 at DraftKings, or the moneyline range on Los Angeles, -185 to -200. None of our own sources track mileage or time zones as a number at all, so there is no internal benchmark for what a cross-continental trip ought to cost a line. What I can check for you is whether our model panel, built without looking at the market price, puts any weight on the side doing the traveling.
The model panel leans the other way
It does not. Of 38 house spread models on this game, 35 of them take San Francisco, the away side, against the market's 3.5-point line. Only 3 take Los Angeles. If a 7,850-mile trip and a Melbourne kickoff were dragging the panel toward the home team, that split would run backwards from the way it runs.
The flagship House NFL Spread model, projecting 6.00, is one of only three home-side outliers against 35 models pointing at the team on the long flight. The total panel is just as one-sided. Four of 5 total models land in the low-to-mid 30s, well under the market's 48-point line. Only House NFL Total goes over, at 50.29:
| Total model | Projected total | Pick | Line |
|---|---|---|---|
| House NFL Total | 50.29 | over | 48 |
| Research Model A | 33.04 | under | 48.5 |
| Research Model B | 33.43 | under | 48.5 |
| Research Model C | 32.30 | under | 48 |
| Research Model D | 32.30 | under | 48 |
A depressed total across most of the panel is at least consistent with a grind-it-out script for a long trip. It is not proof of one. The panel never labels an input as travel-related, and it disagrees with itself on direction about as much as it agrees.
So does the price reflect the record, or ignore it?
So here is the honest answer from what is in front of me. The market's number shows no visible surcharge for the record. Los Angeles at 3.5 is what a designated home team gets most weeks, record trip or not. And if the model panel prices travel at all, it prices it in San Francisco's favor.
35 of 38 spread models and 4 of 5 total models lean away from the market's framing. Either the 38,105-mile, 58-time-zone season those two outlets describe is not an input our panel weighs, or the panel reads it as a reason to like the traveling team instead of fading it. Saying the price ate it undersells the thing. This looks less like a market ignoring a signal and more like a plain number standing in for a strange season, with nothing in the price for you to bet against.
What is still not proven
None of this is graded. Whether the panel's lean toward San Francisco holds, or whether the market was right to leave a record travel season out of a flat 3.5, isn't answerable until they play the Melbourne opener, so don't let anyone sell you the answer early.
Tape vs. Talk
The talk: a record 38,105-mile season, reported by CBS Sports and NBC Sports Bay Area. The tape: the market didn't blink, pricing Los Angeles a plain 3.5, and our own panel likes the team on the long flight. Grudging respect to whoever built that schedule and shrugged at it. Neither the board nor the panel is scared of the miles.
Watch whether the Rams stay at 3.5 through Thursday, because if that number moves on you after a record like this one, the move itself is the story.
