What the prop line actually measures
A player-prop line is one sportsbook's guess at how many catches and yards a man gets. Only Underdog posted one on these three. PrizePicks sat it out. So you're reading one book talking to itself rather than two books arguing, and I use that line as a stand-in for volume, meaning how many looks the market expects a receiver to see.
The Week 1 board answers something else entirely. PPR points, whole afternoon, one figure. It owes the prop line nothing, which is exactly why it counts for something when the two arrive at the same answer.
Same offense, same target pool: Lamb vs. Pickens
Dallas is a 2.5-point favorite on the road at the Giants and the game total sits at 47.5, which puts Dallas's implied team total at 25.0 points. Both Dallas receivers here are catching passes in that same game.
| Receiver | Team | Prop receptions | Prop yards | Projected points, Week 1 (PPR) | Board rank at receiver | ADP | Depth chart |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CeeDee Lamb | DAL | 6.5 | 76.5 | 17.25 | 5 | 10.5 | 1 |
| George Pickens | DAL | 5.5 | 70.5 | 14.68 | 13 | 19.7 | 2 |
| Courtland Sutton | DEN | 4.5 | 42.5 | 11.68 | 30 | 61.2 | 2 |
The book gives Lamb the extra catch, 6.5 against 5.5, and six more yards, 76.5 against 70.5. Small edge, and the board agrees with the direction of it: 17.25 against 14.68, a difference of 2.57. One column explains the size of that better than either figure does. Lamb is listed first for Dallas.
Pickens is listed second. Both markets are looking at the same depth chart I am.
How the three receivers order between the two measures
Denver is a 3-point underdog in Kansas City and that total is 43.0, which puts Denver's implied team total at 20.0, the quieter of the two games here. Courtland Sutton's line is 4.5 catches and 42.5 yards, the lightest volume of the three. Order the trio by the prop line: Lamb, Pickens, Sutton. Order them by the board: Lamb 17.25, Pickens 14.68, Sutton 11.68.
Same three names. Same three seats. Nobody swaps. A fortnight ago I ran this section on the two lists inverting completely.
That was true of the figures in front of me then and it is not true of these.
The call: start the name the prop line and the board both name
On this week's figures the Dallas start is CeeDee Lamb, and I was wrong about him a fortnight ago. He leads on volume, 6.5 catches and 76.5 yards, he leads the board at 17.25 points, fifth among receivers, and Dallas lists him first. Three columns, one answer. George Pickens is not a bench player, he's a 14.68-point receiver in a game expected to score 25, and if you have room for both you play both.
Courtland Sutton is last on both lists, 11.68 points, second on the Denver chart, in the lower-scoring game. He's a third receiver at a price nobody's fighting you for, and that's the whole of it.
The Receipts Drawer
Lamb 17.25, Pickens 14.68, Sutton 11.68. A range of 5.57 covers the three of them, and the prop market puts the same names in the same seats without ever seeing this board. Two sources agreeing gives you nothing to arbitrage. It gives you a lineup.
Set it. The thing that would flip it is the Dallas depth chart. If Pickens takes the starting snaps and Lamb rotates, that 14.68 was built on the wrong role and I'd want it back. Watch who runs the first three routes.
Play Lamb, play Pickens if you have the slot, and hold Sutton for a week where Denver's total isn't the smallest number on the page.
The full receiver board sits on Week 1 fantasy rankings; the player-prop lines used above come from the same source that feeds NFL player props. For the projection-ranked version of this same receiver group, see Our Lean Order From the Line; for the running-back favorite/dog read, see Back the Favorites, Sit the Dogs. Dallas's Week 1 roster is posted at the Cowboys roster page.
