NFL Week 1 QB Start/Sit: What the Spreads Say
Eleven NFL games have spreads in the current feed. Each spread signals a game script — the expected flow of the game — that tells you whether a quarterback will throw more or run less. Here is every Week 1 QB with a spread signal, the line, and the call.
| QB | Team | Opponent | Spread (Home Team) | Script Signal | Call |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jared Goff | DET | vs WAS | DET -1.5 | Slight home favorite → neutral to positive pass volume | Start |
| Anthony Richardson | IND | vs ATL | IND -3.5 | Home favorite → positive script, run-plus-pass upside | Start |
| Jalen Hurts | PHI | @ NE | NE +1.5 | Road favorite → positive script, dual-threat floor | Start |
| Joe Burrow | CIN | vs CHI | CIN +1.5 | Home underdog → must pass to keep pace | Stream |
| Matthew Stafford | LAR | vs NO | LAR +1.5 | Home underdog → must pass to keep pace | Stream |
| Will Levis | TEN | vs SEA | TEN -4.5 | Large home favorite → run-heavy second half risk | Stream |
| Baker Mayfield | TB | vs KC | TB -5.5 | Large home favorite → run-heavy second half risk | Stream |
| Dak Prescott | DAL | @ ARI | ARI -1.5 | Road underdog → garbage-time volume chance | Stream |
| Geno Smith | SEA | @ TEN | TEN -4.5 | Road underdog → garbage-time volume chance | Stream |
| Josh Allen | BUF | @ CLE | CLE -3 | Road underdog → negative script, Browns defense elite | Sit |
| Lamar Jackson | BAL | @ MIN | MIN -3.5 | Road underdog → negative script, Vikings defense improved | Sit |
| Patrick Mahomes | KC | @ TB | TB -5.5 | Road underdog → large negative script, Bucs defense stout | Sit |
How to Read the Script Signal
Home favorite (negative spread): The market expects the home team to win. If the spread is small, the game stays close and the quarterback throws all game. If the spread is large, the home team builds a lead and runs the clock in the second half. That caps quarterback upside.
Home underdog (positive spread): The market expects the home team to lose. The offense trails and throws late to catch up. That creates garbage-time volume (passes when losing late). The quarterback may post empty calories but hits a usable floor.
Road favorite: The visitor is favored. Same logic as home favorite — small spread means close game and pass volume; large spread means run clock late.
Road underdog: The visitor is the underdog. Same logic as home underdog — trails and throws late for garbage-time volume.
The Start Tier: Positive Script, Dual-Threat Floors
Jared Goff — Lions vs Commanders
Detroit is a 1.5-point home favorite . A tight spread means the game stays close. Goff throws to keep pace. He finished 2024 as a top-eight quarterback in points per reception (PPR — points per reception scoring). The Lions offense returns everyone. Start him with confidence.
Anthony Richardson — Colts vs Falcons
Indianapolis is a 3.5-point home favorite . Richardson adds rushing upside (designed quarterback runs) that most quarterbacks lack. Even if the Colts lead, he runs. The Falcons defense was middle-of-the-pack last year. If his shoulder holds, he is a top-twelve play. Start him.
Jalen Hurts — Eagles at Patriots
Philadelphia is a 1.5-point road favorite (Patriots +1.5 home ). Hurts runs and throws. A close game means maximum usage. The Patriots defense was below average last year. Hurts has a rushing floor (consistent running production) that separates him from pure pocket passers. Start him.
The Stream Tier: Garbage-Time Volume or Large-Favorite Risk
Joe Burrow — Bengals vs Bears. Cincinnati is a 1.5-point home underdog . The Bengals trail and throw. Burrow sees volume. But the Bears defense improved. Stream only if you need a fill-in.
Matthew Stafford — Rams vs Saints. Los Angeles is a 1.5-point home underdog . Same logic — trails, throws, volume. Stafford targets Tyler Higbee (tight end) heavily. Stream in deep leagues.
Will Levis — Titans vs Seahawks. Tennessee is a 4.5-point home favorite . Large favorite means run clock late. Levis loses pass attempts in the fourth quarter. Stream only in superflex (leagues where you start two quarterbacks) or deep one-QB.
Baker Mayfield — Buccaneers vs Chiefs. Tampa Bay is a 5.5-point home favorite . Same large-favorite risk. Mayfield finished 2024 as a top-twelve quarterback but the script caps Week 1 upside. Stream, do not start.
Dak Prescott — Cowboys at Cardinals. Arizona is a 1.5-point home favorite . Dallas is the corresponding road underdog. Trailing script creates garbage-time throws. Prescott has weapons but the floor is shaky. Stream only.
Geno Smith — Seahawks at Titans. Tennessee is a 4.5-point home favorite . Seattle is the corresponding road underdog. Large deficit means late passes. Smith throws volume but efficiency suffers. Stream in superflex only.
The Sit Tier: Negative Script, Elite Defenses
Josh Allen — Bills at Browns
Cleveland is a 3-point home favorite . Buffalo is the corresponding road underdog. The Browns defense was elite last year (top-three in pass defense). Allen faces a negative script (trailing, then running clock when behind) against a unit that smothers passing attacks. Sit him if you have a viable alternative.
Lamar Jackson — Ravens at Vikings
Minnesota is a 3.5-point home favorite . Baltimore is the corresponding road underdog. The Vikings defense improved meaningfully in 2024. Jackson's rushing floor helps but the negative script and tough matchup combine for a low-ceiling week. Sit him.
Patrick Mahomes — Chiefs at Buccaneers
Tampa Bay is a 5.5-point home favorite . Kansas City is the corresponding road underdog. That is the largest road-underdog spread on the board. The Bucs defense projects as above average. Mahomes trails by multiple scores and throws into tight windows. Sit him in one-QB leagues.
What Would Change Our Mind
Allen → Start if the Bills line flips to pick'em or Buffalo favored. Jackson → Start if the Ravens become favorites. Mahomes → Start if the Chiefs line moves back in their favor. Levis → Start if the Titans spread drops further. Mayfield → Start if the Bucs line falls further. Check the start-sit desk Saturday night for final lines and injury news.
