Free bet conversion strategy 2026 update: 71 books, zero NFL dispersion on half the slate, no gaps. College spreads too wide. Arbitrage window shut.

The Free-Bet Conversion Guide we published assumed you could find a 1–2 point spread gap across books on a normal NFL game. You would back one side with a free bet and the other side with cash. The math works when books disagree. The August 22 odds feed says that disagreement has mostly vanished.

Half the NFL slate shows zero disagreement across 71 books

Six of twelve NFL games show the exact same spread at all 71 books. Falcons at Colts sits at -3.5 (line-3c0361eed8120d457667568f6597016f). Ravens at Vikings sits at -3.5 (line-883b38f5ba3b8125ea9021d432b4cf5f). Bears at Bengals sits at +1.5 (line-6dde5642256d4cab5e5a51447d879021). Chiefs at Buccaneers sits at -5.5 (line-e967d85a6548f086f54d80e5cefa158a). Cowboys at Cardinals sits at -1.5 (line-ad790c38fc725de6e291eed1e33ea500). Seahawks at Titans sits at -4.5 (line-ebf859e53b7fa093ec49db48b870f2ac).

Zero dispersion means zero gap. You cannot structure a hedge that covers both outcomes when every book posts the same number.

Six NFL games show a pulse — but the ranges are thin

Packers at Broncos spans -6.5 to -6 across 71 books (line-6aeeec35daee963272fbe38448589a76, 0.5-point range). Bills at Browns spans -3 to -2.5 across 71 books (line-e2002d8b700edb5a9b44786e4b1a3b64, 0.5-point range). Eagles at Patriots spans +1.5 to +2.5 across 71 books (line-a2c8b439595e23946ff343bd350673dc, 1-point range). Saints at Rams spans +1.5 to +3 across 71 books (line-04c3428b8166f2353b0e2d80cef9c286, 1.5-point range). Giants at Dolphins spans +2.5 to +3.5 across 71 books (line-da817acdbca0fd0a5537d164587a38aa, 1-point range). Commanders at Lions spans -4.5 to -1.5 across 71 books (line-d6b25026fff026c4eed65a104032afb4, 3-point range).

A 3-point range on a 3-point favorite is the only line with theoretical room. But 71 books seeing the same injury report and weather forecast and still splitting by 3 points usually means the market is uncertain, not that one side is clearly wrong. The conversion math needs a clear wrong number, not a confused market.

College slates are mismatches, not two-way markets

The feed is crowded with college games where the favorite is laid 20 to 40 points. San Jose State at USC shows -38.5 at 71 books (line-672d90c097d14bec14b49dcf2c6c1653). New Mexico State at Florida State shows -31.5 at 71 books (line-7283161473d3dc7a5fae1abb31cc8ea7). Bethune-Cookman at UCF shows -41.5 at 1 book (line-1502f9bc407d446e172acae5ddcadc29). UAlbany at Buffalo shows -24.5 at 1 book (line-71ea760fe78f874d47216658bbd7c4a4). Akron at Wake Forest shows -23.5 at 71 books (line-3b5b0d90dd31dc52e45fc0d5a18831f1). Massachusetts at Rutgers shows -30.5 at 71 books (line-dbd30e07ae9dfe206590ffe6eb125b1d). West Georgia at Kennesaw State shows -22.5 at 1 book (line-94ad6d1c5c93729009de33389adecf34).

These games show dispersion in book count — some at 1 book, some at 71 — but not in spread. A 38-point favorite does not have a two-way market (a market where both sides take bets). You cannot lay -38.5 on one book and take +38.5 on another with a free bet. The underdog side has no betting volume and the vig (the book's fee) on the favorite eats the free-bet value.

What the guide got right, and what the feed broke

The guide's steps — find a gap, size the hedge, complete the hedge — are mathematically sound. The EV tool at Shark Snip still implements them. What broke is the input. The guide assumed a market with fewer books and usable gaps on normal spreads. The current feed gives 71 books and zero dispersion on half the NFL slate, or massive spreads with no two-way action on the college slate.

The EV tool rebuild added a minimum book count before it scores any line. Today every NFL game clears that floor. The tool then checks dispersion. Zero dispersion returns no edge. The guide's workflow would hit that same wall on every flat game.

What would change our mind

If an NFL game drops from 71 books to a low number on a re-check — meaning books are pulling lines — the conversion math reopens. If a game currently at zero dispersion suddenly splits 2 points across 20-plus books, the gap-hunt becomes viable again. The number that flips the take is book count dropping, not spread moving. A 71-book consensus that holds is a locked door. A 71-book consensus that fractures is an opening.

One thing to do

Check the EV tool before you burn a free bet. If book count is 71 and dispersion is 0, walk away. Only chase free bets on games where the tool flags a stale line or an unstable spread.

Bet responsibly — set limits, never chase losses.

Frequently asked questions

Why does line dispersion matter for free-bet conversion?
Free-bet conversion needs two books to disagree on a spread so you can bet both sides — one with the free bet, one with cash — and secure a defined return no matter the outcome. Zero dispersion means every book posts the same number. There is no gap to exploit.
Which NFL games show any dispersion in the current feed?
Six NFL games show dispersion: Commanders at Lions spans -4.5 to -1.5 across 71 books (line-d6b25026fff026c4eed65a104032afb4, 3-point range), Saints at Rams spans +1.5 to +3 (line-04c3428b8166f2353b0e2d80cef9c286, 1.5-point range), Giants at Dolphins spans +2.5 to +3.5 (line-da817acdbca0fd0a5537d164587a38aa, 1-point range), Eagles at Patriots spans +1.5 to +2.5 (line-a2c8b439595e23946ff343bd350673dc, 1-point range), Packers at Broncos spans -6.5 to -6 (line-6aeeec35daee963272fbe38448589a76, 0.5-point range), and Bills at Browns spans -3 to -2.5 (line-e2002d8b700edb5a9b44786e4b1a3b64, 0.5-point range). The other six NFL games are flat at 71 books with zero dispersion.
Can college games still work for free-bet conversion?
College games show dispersion in book count — some at 1 book, some at 71 — but the spreads are massive mismatches: USC -38.5 (line-672d90c097d14bec14b49dcf2c6c1653), Florida State -31.5 (line-7283161473d3dc7a5fae1abb31cc8ea7), UCF -41.5 (line-1502f9bc407d446e172acae5ddcadc29). These are not two-way markets. You cannot hedge a 38-point favorite with a free bet on the underdog and expect reasonable volume on both sides.
What changed since the original guide was written?
Three things. First, NFL market depth went from fewer books to 71 books with perfect consensus on half the slate — the arbitrage window closed. Second, the EV tool we shipped in August (Market Consensus Is Not Stable) requires a minimum book count before it trusts a line; today every NFL game clears that gate but half show zero dispersion. Third, college games now dominate the raw feed with spreads that have no conversion utility. The guide's core assumption — that you can find a 1–2 point gap across books on a normal NFL spread — is false in the current feed.
Is there any scenario where free-bet conversion still works?
Only if a sportsbook posts a stale line that the other books have moved off. That happens in two cases: a late injury scratch that one book has not reacted to, or a promotional boosted line that is deliberately mispriced. The EV tool flags these when book count drops on a game that previously had full consensus. Outside of stale lines or promos, the math does not work.
