NFL Week 1 FLEX Waiver Wire: Who to Claim and What to Bid
Week 1 waiver claims are a market inefficiency. Managers draft in August, then ignore the wire until the first waiver run. But the game lines already tell us which offenses will be chasing points, which backfields will see goal-line work, and which pass catchers will see volume. We read the spreads, project the script, and bid accordingly.
1. Bucky Irving — RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Our projection: 14.2 PPR | Consensus: 10.8 PPR | Gap: +3.4 | Bid: 12% of original FAAB
The Buccaneers are 5.5-point home favorites against the Chiefs . A spread that large at home implies a game script where Tampa Bay controls the clock and leans on the run in the second half. Irving led the Bucs in rush attempts over the final three preseason games and profiles as the clear early-down back. Consensus still prices him as a committee piece; the model sees a lead-back workload in a positive script. If Rachaad White cedes goal-line snaps — a real possibility given Irving's preseason usage — the upside jumps another tier.
2. Tyler Higbee — TE, Los Angeles Rams
Our projection: 11.7 PPR | Consensus: 8.9 PPR | Gap: +2.8 | Bid: 6% of original FAAB
The Rams are 1.5-point home favorites against the Saints . A tight spread at home means Matthew Stafford has to throw to win, and Higbee is his security blanket — 24% target share in games Stafford finished last year. Consensus treats Higbee as a low-end TE1; the model sees a top-eight tight-end week in a game where the Rams likely trail early and throw late. The bid is lower than Irving's because tight-end replacement cost is lower, but the gap per dollar is comparable.
3. Hunter Henry — TE, New England Patriots
Our projection: 9.4 PPR | Consensus: 6.7 PPR | Gap: +2.7 | Bid: 4% of original FAAB
The Patriots are 1.5-point home favorites against the Eagles . New England's offense projects to be pass-heavy by necessity — Jacoby Brissett (or Drake Maye) lacks a downfield run game, and the Eagles' pass rush forces quick throws. Henry ran a route on 82% of dropbacks last year and led Patriots tight ends in red-zone targets. Consensus has him outside the top 12; the model puts him at TE9 for Week 1. At 4% of FAAB, this is a lottery ticket with a plausible floor.
How the spreads drive the bids
Every bid above ties directly to a game line. Large home favorites (Bucs -5.5 ) create run-heavy second halves. Tight home spreads (Rams -1.5 , Patriots -1.5 ) create pass volume for security-blanket targets. The model does not guess at game script — it reads the market's implied script from the line and projects usage accordingly. What would change our mind
If Irving's snap share drops below 55% in the first half, the bid collapses to 3%. If Higbee runs routes on fewer than 70% of dropbacks, the bid drops to 1%.
