You want to know New York football giants after a division rival win over the Cowboys at home in week one starting the season off right. Today I'm here joined by my co-host Nick Falato to talk about the Giants defense on all 22. I can't wait to get into some of these players. Abdul Carter was everywhere on that tape. You want to talk about effort. You want to talk about effort in the run game. People have doubted him in this regard. This man is a different man in year two and we're going to talk about that today and a lot more before we get into that. And I will say this because I did preface it in the last Offensive Film Podcast. We are going to get to the film earlier. I know there's a lot of people in here watching saying go to the film. You said this was a film review. We'll get there. But I want to do a couple of overall feel and views and general perspective you have from watching that tape now, Nick. Yeah, no, I thought the Giants were in coverage. It wasn't nearly as like some of those were ticky tacky calls, right? As we talked about, there was a lot of cover four zone, a lot of cover three zone. And some of those were match principles where the zone just kind of divulges into a man coverage essentially. But we did get cover one. We had some cover zero snaps as well. I've heard a lot of talk about Brian Burns and how well Brian Burns didn't have any pressure. Where's Brian? Almost it seemed like almost every play that the Cowboys had a tight end releasing towards him if he wasn't chipping him with either a tight end or a running back. But there was somebody impeding his progress against Tyler Guy. And there was just a lot of attention paid to Brian Burns. And I love or at least I believe Dennardwilson did a great job noticing that through the game and then dropping Burns into coverage, moving him over TJ. Bass, trying to isolate Burns and get him going a little bit. But Dallas really had number zero circled. And he only had 30 pass rush reps to Carter's 37. And I think a reason for that was because there was sliding protection. And they were just having a lot of allocating a lot of blocking resources towards Brian Burns. He still was doing an excellent job uncovering in the run. And he had a pressure that was removed from him because of the DPI. It was actually a quarterback hit. And he had another one that I thought was a pressure. That was an obvious hold by Tyler Guy. And both him and Abdul Carter were held a few different times. But he did net officially zero pressures in this game. That's what that's one of my take away. And then there was another one, man. I'm a little concerned about the depth that defensive line thought DJ Reader was phenomenal in this game. Phenomenal, right? But every time they went to that second unit of Darius Alexander and Akoye, holy shit did its problem like Akoye was fine. He's way too high in his stance, right? And he gets kind of pushed up, but he's hard to move. Alexander though, what the? This guy's just getting thrown around by double teams. It's really tough having him out there. And then Golston, I think, is an absolute stud on the inside in those second and long and third and manageable situations, putting him as like a three technique. He was another difference making player that had four pressures in this game. But I am concerned, man, about about the depth at defensive line. If you suffer a DJ Reader injury, knock on wood, like we might be screwed, which is we'll talk about more of that, because that's a depth issue for the Giants, and it just shows how good Reader was. I'll get to that a little bit later. I their case can be made. He's better against the run than Dex. Like I don't know if I would agree with that at all times, but there are like there are things he does in the run game, as far as like maintaining gaps and forcing running backs to choose different gaps to jump into that. I can say Dex did at times, but not always. It wasn't just always as good as it looks at times of Reader. It's another story for another day. It's a great run defender doesn't offer much of a pass rusher. But I'm laughing as you were talking about it, because I was thinking about last show, Nick, and I was like, you know, so gung ho on like, I'm so happy the Giants didn't take Caleb Downs over Francis Mali. No, because they understood that the assignment, what I really think football is about. I feel the same way and it never would have happened. But I would prefer Francis Mali know at 10 overall to Jeremiah Love. I think Francis now I know it makes a clear and obvious more of an impact on the game than Jeremiah Love, who had a good game with the Cardinals, who didn't have this unreal game. And as we head into this next draft course, I already see some Jaden Ball, like propaganda for the Giants. We're here. We're ready to take Jaden Ball in round one. Dude, give me a defensive lineman there. Just give me, we did it with Mario Noah. Let's run it back with a defensive lineman who can hold the point of attack. Because this may not be a fully complete roster just yet, but we are building it in the image as you went over last podcast. That image is twofold. It's not just offense. It's on defense as well. To build the defense out in the image that Harbaugh wants, we're going to need defensive lineman. We need to prioritize this position going into next offices. You absolutely knocked it out the park right there, Dan. It is very important because look, DJ Reader is 32, Shelby Harris is 31 or 32 years old. Those are stop gaps right here. In the overall identity and the overall personnel, the Giants are trying to cultivate, trying to build right here in New York, which is a championship winning team. Those guys can have a part, but you need a long-term solution. If you spend a third-round pick two drafts ago on one, I don't think that's gonna be it. I think you can be a player. I'm not writing Darius Alexander off, but I don't want Darius Alexander trying to anchor against a double team. I don't wanna see that anymore, okay? I think I'm done with that experiment. Have him be a pass rusher and use his quickness and hopefully his use of hands develops a little bit more, but I don't think you can trust him in that area. Maybe I'm being a little bit too hard, but this was an older rookie coming out. Slow start, slow start, and now he's getting uprooted by an offensive line. It's injured, doesn't even have Tyler Smith. Overall, I remain pessimistic about the depth of the defensive line, but holy shit, the DJ Reader impressed me. And the linebacker, Tremaine Edmonds too. Tremaine Edmonds, very impressive. We'll talk about him as well. And I'll say this, my quick take of it before we get into the tape is this. The Giants had just a 22% blitz rate in this game. That's only one-fifth of their plays. They send more than four pass rushers. That was 22nd in the NFL. I'm sorry, it was a 21% blitz rate. It was 22nd in the NFL this week. That's a little bit lower than what I expect from Wilson. He's not going to blitz a lot. He's not a coordinator of blitzes a lot. It's a lot of sim pressure. But it's definitely lower than I expected. And my takeaway after watching the tape is like, this is the DAC effect. Like if you watch this game, man, it's kind of insane, dude. Like they used, it's wild what DAC is able to do to me when I watch the rest of these NFL quarterbacks, because you went over it and we've gone over this off-pod. Like the Cowboys used a lot of resources to protect the passer in this game. They had Burns, there was a rep you put up on Twitter where they had three guys trying to block Brian Burns on one play. Despite the fact that they have all these guys in on pass production and the Giants are only blitzing on one fifth of their plays, so they're only sending four and dropping seven. It just seems like DAC has windows and stuff to throw into, like outside the numbers, it's there. It's just odd. So something is wrong here. The Giants are dropping more than the Cowboys are protect, or are sending out in pass routes, and yet these pass routes are working over and over again. A lot of these were interference calls and stuff, but I got to be honest with you, I think some are tiki-taka dude, but a lot of these are just the call to be made. They're just bad plays by the DBs. I agree. And look, dude, like Colton Hood could have been flagged. I don't think it should have been, but it could have been like someone could have been like, oh, well, he kind of made contact. I think it was more of a flag personally on George Pickens. But my point in bringing this up was he got his head around. He got his head around early and he located the football, and then he, yes, Drew Phillips doesn't do that, dude. Drew Phillips doesn't do that. He's like flails his arms. He gets too touchy. I don't think the Greg Newsome one should have been called. And there was one Drew Phillips one that I was like, oh, it's tiki-taki, but still you gotta execute. If you execute better technique, it more than likely will not be called. I say that while also bitching about refs on Sunday. So maybe I'll eat my words there, but technique is a big part of it. You gotta locate the football. The rules are skewed towards the wide receivers in this damn sport. That's why I'm always pro defense, baby. But yeah, now the Giants secondary still a little bit of a concern there. Have we heard anything about the injury? I think the injuries were not serious to say. No, I haven't. More newsome, yeah. I haven't seen, but we did get a Debo snaps and Colton Hood snaps at the end of that game. It is what it is at corner. It's gonna be tough to find these positions over time. But as I walk into the off season, I will think we're in a much better spot if we build out our trenches and our D line over the corners and try to waste more resources in the corner. We just used the 33rd pick. We gotta try to develop these guys and pray for the best at corner. It's hard to play corner in the NFL. And clearly that was obvious watching these guys try to play against these receivers. Given the fact that Dakwish is getting the ball out so freaking fast with all these guys in pass protection. And yet it seemed to work every time. It's a little disappointing for me watching the defensive tape personally, Nick. I thought they were great in the run game. That was backed up. We talked about that last night. I love the run defense in this game. The pass defense reminds me of the ones we've seen over the last few years, where it's like, on paper, this amazing pass rush, where the corners shouldn't matter. And yet, if you play a processor like Dak, the corners do matter, and the pass rushers don't. And then it's like, well, can these corners do anything for you? And to me, it felt like last night, the answer was pretty much no across the board. And the safeties as well, minus Holland's one play. We'll get into some of that later. But it is what it is. The run defense was amazing, and the offense was amazing. That's enough to win a football game a lot of times. So let's get into some of the film review. I'm sure we'll see some of those great plays in the run game, and maybe some plays in the passing game that could have gone our way if we didn't get a defensive flag thrown. Yeah, some of those defensive flags that were thrown on us. It was a little bit annoying, but let's start right here then with the New York Giants. This is the first in 10 late in the first quarter. It's going to be a shot play too high cover for as we'll see. Hopefully it starts running. It does. And I just like how the safeties played it. So I wanted to I wanted to include this now. I hope this is a commute. It's some sort of communication because you have two vertical routes. It ends up being a deep flag route underneath the vertical from George Dickens by Jake Ferguson, who got absolutely bitched by Abdul Carter and Jevonte Williams on one play. I put that up on Twitter. But watch out this cover for you. See, Jevon Holland start to enter his backpedal, his backpedal. But he senses that this is going to be a deep. So what does he do? He matches it and he undercuts. And I like how he did this as long as again, as long as this safety right here drops back and it kind of does happen that way. But it does look like Deontay Banks is beat. So I just want to make sure that that is communicated well. I didn't feel like Tyler Nubin was in the best position for a lot of this game. We saw what one snap of Ardarius Washington, which was somewhat of a surprise. Surprising. Yeah. Yeah. It was somewhat of a surprise to me. But I do like how it was passed off if the ball was to go or were to go to Jake Ferguson, because Jevon Hawn was right there to cover it because the underneath defenders, Brian Burns and he's being held in check by the flare route right here from Jevonte Williams. And we have this thing popping up on my screen, but we'll get rid of that here in a minute. Well worth it to get the cursor moving in. Yes. Yes. Here we go. Here's another play, a third and fours, cover one. This is the play where Pickens easily uncovers, but it's a drop. But damn, dude, like this is like George Pickens, like George Pickens had like three routes where it was one on one man coverage and he opens to one side and just like either bends around or works into the blind spot of a Giants cornerback and uncovers. He's so silky smooth for a six foot four wider. So you just don't really see a lot of players like him in the NFL. Yeah, it's it. Pickens to me. Do you think I don't want to get into this conversation? There's a case to be made that Pickens is better than Lam. Yeah, no, I don't think that's a crazy case. He's like unguardable. I feel like he's just purely unguardable for any. None of the Giants corners could guard him without interfering with him. The Dallas offense could be so dangerous if they get going. And look, Pickens played like shit in this game. He had two drops. Right. But like how he's able to just work around like I thought Greg Newsom was fine. But like he's just outmatched. Like George Pickens is just a better player than Greg Newsom the second. Right. And watch how he just easily like works around him. And he falls, Greg Newsom. There's no one else in that area because Javon Holland is way too close to the line of scrimmage on this third and four play. But I love how the Giants look. This third and four Giants are going to mug up the A-gap. They're going to get both of their linebackers in there. You're going to have Kayvon on the inside with Goldstein. They have all your studs out there rushing the passer. And then you have Brian Burns drop off the line of scrimmage. And it just ends up being a four man rush with Tremaine Edmonds kind of spying and operating as somebody middle hook underneath for Dak Prescott, just keeping his eye on him. Here's a second and five though. And we're going to see a Tampa two. And I love how our Valerice right here is going to carry George Pickens at the seam. You see how the Giants dropped to the too high carries George Pickens up the seam and paces with him as well. You absolutely love to see that. And it's a simulated pressure again with Burns dropping off the line of scrimmage and Drew Phillips going from the other side. So you have a four man rush. Burns is athletic enough to operate these little like little flats and just kind of sink underneath the watch. Javontae Williams on this side. That was a crazy, crazy drawing right there. But everything is covered up except that deep dig. It looks like it could have been open, but Dak Prescott came off it, stepped up and then just ran for a small game. Now we're going to have this is still the second and five. Javontae, you just want him to finish this play with Javontae. Javontae, there were a few plays against the run where Javontae got bitched too. He had a couple of great plays against the run too though. He did. I think Monty tagged me. He had to take a Javontae. I thought Javontae was fine. He just had two plays that were really bad. He just wanted to finish a play like this at the pass, which would be knocked into the path of Dak Prescott. Javontae was fine though in the game. Those two plays were some that we need to be cleaned up a little bit. Here's a third and 11. I absolutely love that Dak Prescott takes a massive hit here from Brian Burns. This is on the penalty. You can see George Pickens is stacked. This is why it's like, look, I thought the contact was pretty incidental. It didn't really deter George Pickens from going for the football. It was just an underthrown ball because Brian Burns absolutely destroyed it. This is the bullshit about the NFL. If you underthrow a pass, it's always DPI. I 100% agree, but I will say this just as a caveat. Newsome's cooked. I know. Newsome's cooked. He's stacked in everything. I thought Newsome was... To me, before he got hurt, I thought Newsome was pretty disappointing in this game. Yeah, I thought he was going to be no matter what. I guess he was. Yeah, I guess it just is what it is with these guys. We're playing Pickens and Lam. Yeah, exactly. But the thing I look at is what the hell is Tyler Newbin doing here? This is a too high defense. Tyler Newbin's turning... Is this supposed to be one on one? Because it doesn't like... Newson was playing this outside leverage. He's playing like he has a too high defender helping him out a little bit, right? Like almost like he's in a trail technique. And and Newbin just jumps on Kavante Turpin when you still have... Despite there being another safety. Yeah. What is that? So he did this a few times in this game, Newbin, where I'm like, Oh, what the? When are we going to see Jason Pinnock? And why is his eyes not on the quarterback? What is he doing here? He's like, dude, we talked about this in the in the preseason, where I felt like the Giants, we said the Giants safeties were doing a good job watching the backside routes coming over. But it seemed like, at least on a play like this, you don't want to leave to the boundary. Right. Reagan knew some one-on-one against freaking George Pickens. That's just not a place on a third and 11. It's not even, it's a field. It's not even making him make a far hash throw here. Like you should be way more worried about Pickens route than that route carrying up the seam with a safety Holland to your right. I don't really understand. This is something probably we don't know about. No, I mean, it's a three by one set. So maybe they just had Meg here and they wanted him to take like any, any three that was working in this area because Holland was going to expand out to have the deep half on that side. Could have been that, but it just seemed like by, by the, and it could just be that Newsome just gets cooked here, but it did seem like the leverage of Newsome and the way he played it, he thought he was going to have help over the top. But that could just be George Pickens, just being George Pickens and beating him that badly. Something that had to be acknowledged though on this third and 11 that gets extended. Good pass rush by Burns though. Yeah, and this is what the Giants were doing on some of these third down situations. They would align Burns as a linebacker and get him up against TJ. Bass, who was replacing Tyler Smith, and he just easily just runs right past this kid. Dip your shoulder, rip underneath, and hit back Prescott. It's a shame that that's just very ticky tacky still, even though he gets cooked. Yeah, I mean, the thing is like he's trying to work back to make the catch and that they're just going to call it every time. I know, I know. Here's a little cover three. This is a shot that was dropped by Pickens. Abdul Carter just wins so quickly on a second and four. Yeah, I can't believe Pickens dropped this. Yeah, no, that was put there too, man. Was this right before the interception? Wow, that would have changed the whole game. It was a few plays before, yep. It would have changed the whole game. And here you see good technique by Newsom's right there, right? He's right there, he's right there. And I'll say this, that's just such a good throw by Dag Fresco. Holy shit, dude. I'll say this, man, Lam and Pickens both had that Mike Evans thing in this game. There were a lot of subtle little push offs by the Dallas. Oh, dude, all game. All game, and it was not called. And I felt like these guys are stars now, so they're going to get away with that. Yeah. And this is the type of shit that Brian Burns was dealing with a lot, right? Like, not only does he have Lipky or whatever the hell his name is to help out Tyler Guyton, but he also has to deal with the tight end releasing in his direction, which just forces him to step inside to give Guyton more of an advantageous framing of the block of him. He was dealing with that shit the entire game. Yeah, he had zero pressures. I don't care. Like, he's still an impactful player, right? He was dealing with this all game. And then Abdul Carter, he gets the one-on-one matchup at the top and just look how quickly he wins around the edge. He can bend the edge so well. Yeah, and that ball is just put right there for picking. Such a good throw. I know. Such a good throw. All right, here's a third and four now. This is on the very next play. And it's just quick, quick shot over to CD Lamb to pick up the first down. You need Javon Holland to contain there. You have Devon or Terry Banks getting flurneway up the field. And the Giants tried, you know, third and four, try to get a little creative and bring a blitz. And Dak throws right into the blitz. And it's an easy first down. But again, this is a diagnosed, like Dak Prescott knows a blitz is coming. You have a mugged up look on the line of scrimmage and he finds a quick solution. This is the shit that you and I talk about all time with this guy. Yeah. And the next is the next play. It's first and 10 after they pick it up. It's an incomplete pass. I like how the Giants run this twist up front. I like how Javon Holland takes this is a three by one set. You're going to have the deep bender. Javon Holland matches that. And you still have Tyler Newbon at the top of the screen. And there's really nowhere for Dak Prescott to go. And he just kind of throws it away. But if you look here, because it's a cover six, and you have Tyler Newbon taking care of the deep half. Flannoy, I believe this is, runs outside with Tay Banks kind of sitting, because he's that flat defender right there, being held in check by the running back, just getting his eyes on it. There was an opportunity for that to be hit, and it was just seen a little bit too late. And I think Dak Prescott, I don't know why he bailed off of it so much. The Giants ran this pressure. It's blocked up pretty well, but he bails off of it. Doesn't like what he sees through his left side and threw it away. But it seems like a missed opportunity by Dallas. Here we're going to have a third and five. That's the interception. Javon Holland does a great job reading this and working back towards it. Kayvon does a great job pressuring. Makes that interception. It's a great catch by the sideline, just a really overall phenomenal play by him. Look at Abdul Carter, man, doing his thing. I'll rewind here in a little bit. Abdul Carter helps flush Dak Prescott out of the pocket. Look how he creates. Look, they had two guys on Abdul, man, but watch how he just separates from the guard right into the center, twists into the pocket, gets Dak out of it. Like that allows Kayvon to do his thing, which forces this interception. The Giants win the game. Like little plays like this, man, they mount on top, they compound, right? Here's first and 10. This is towards the end of the half. Scott stay on top of everything, right? Cover four and you get a solid pass rush. Giants are just staying on top of all these routes. Taye Banks squeezing, Pickens off the red line. You have Newsome working against Lam, staying high and on top. Both safeties are over top of Flanoi, keeping their eyes. And it's just really good coverage by the Giants forcing a check down. And eventually the time on the clock would just run out. Got both these linebackers out here. A lot of twisting from the Giants too. Like a lot of TEs and ETs. Here, Chauncey Goldston going up against Bass. Just easily gets that quarterback hustle. Yeah, no, Goldston was a stud in this game. Yeah, he had a great game. And they did a good job isolating Bass. I thought that was a good part of their game plan. Absolutely. I put this in here, man. We haven't talked a lot about Arbel Reese. Oh, yeah. But just watch how Reese gets in matches. He needs to finish the tackle, but he gets out there so quickly and then forces Javante Williams inside, ends up being a loss here. It's just he covers ground so well. And I'm glad that he was dialed into his assignment because he wasn't like that the entire game, especially in its past, which led to that touchdown that we'll see a little bit. Right. Yeah, I was going to ask you about that one. Yeah. Third and 12, a little push off by CD. Lamb. Good little route pushes off the day, but ends up catching its way with it. Yeah. And there's just a big hold on Burns here. And I don't know why this isn't the pressure. It seems like it should have been. He's right in the face of Dak Prescott and he's getting clothesline and held by Tyler Dayton on this play. And to me, that's kind of a pressure, no? I guess not. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know what they consider pressures. To me, that's a pressure too. And that's such a hilarious no call. How is this? Yes. This is the best use so far. You've had the cursors in the two shows. We've done this. I'm just side-clops laser-eyeing from these idiots. Look at this back judge. He's right on it. Look at that. I think a lot of the times they just decide not to call it, like based on whatever. But when your hips, when you're the pass rusher and your hips are this way and freaking the blockers hips are here. Yeah. No, like he can't throw a block without holding. It's a stupid thing in general, because like it's like it's a it's a rule like where the whole leagues accepts like we're not going to call it every time because if we did the game would suck. That's a bad rule then. That's it. And then it's like, you know what I mean? Just generally speaking, that makes a rule horrible. It's like we can't call holding every time that all right, well, then when are you going to call it? Just randomly going to decide when it's okay to call makes no sense. It's stupid, man. It's stupid. We got to cover zero. Look here. We didn't get a lot of it in this game. But here's a cover. I think he actually had nine percent cover zero is what what the true media said. Yeah. I'm not sure. Right. I didn't see it too much. I mean, this wasn't that might be just one or two plays. I didn't have that many plays on defense. No. Yeah. But second in ten, though, late in the fourth quarter, Tyler Newbon Bale stays over the top. But you can see, man, you run cover zero. This should have been a touchdown. That's what I watched in the broadcast. And I rewatch it today in the alternate. I was like, this should have been a touchdown. And if you look at the top of the screen, both Pickens and Adabo or no, well, Tay Banks kind of comes up on it at the top. Or no, that's not Tay. Colton Hood comes up on it. David was getting so burned here. Yeah, I know, man. He's so slow, bro. It's crazy for a corner to be as slow as Paul Sanadabo is at this stage of his career. And Tremaine ends up slipping through the Giants. There's not a chance they're keeping him past this year. What a horrific signing that was. I don't think so either. Kayvon gets handled by Guyton. Abdul Carter gets handled by Steele. Nice little admin splits. Oh yeah. Plug admins, send, drop Reese off. I love it. I love how it worked, but. It worked because they missed, but that was, if he's thrown inside the numbers, that's like a walk in touchdown. If it was thrown anywhere else, it might have been. Yeah, really. Anywhere in his vicinity. And here's just a blown coverage by Arvind. By Reese. Yeah. I don't know what happened here. You get here and it looks, well, they brought Gervonta here to here. And I don't know if that's switched assignments. I'm not really 100% sure. But Reese obviously saw the drag route, got held by it, at least it appears. And he just completely lost his assignment there. And that's at least what it appears like. I don't know who else would have been responsible for Gervonta Williams. Just like a blown coverage. There's no one else who could be responsible for him. Yeah. And it's an easy and he just kind of taunts as he walks in. Enjoy the elbow there, Gervonta. Yeah, those are all the plays that I have of the defense. But yeah, dude, Giants, interesting defense. Didn't really do too much because the offense carried so much, but they executed when they had to and Giants come away with a dub. And the past rush looked like the ball was coming out so damn quickly, dude. So damn quickly. It's hard. It's hard to get home when that happens, right? Like it wasn't like they were inept. Like there's been past years where the Giants got like no pressure. And it just seemed like they weren't getting any pressure here. It seemed like, at least to me, maybe you can disagree. I think there were plays where, yeah, they weren't getting as much pressure you'd like, but there were plays where the Giants were winning quickly. And the ball was just out, dude, like Dak was just on top of not allowing Brian Burns, Kavon Thibodeau and Abdul Carter to affect this game. That's exactly right. That's what it felt. It was just, again, I'll reiterate, it was shocking to me for them to allocate so many resources to pass production, have so few guys running routes and us dropping seven almost every play and not impacting the pass. I guess I could say I was a little bit disappointed, I guess, from what we got from recent Edmonds in the passing game. I did like what Edmonds did, how he played overall, especially in the run game and just kind of rallying to the ball. But just as far as like getting in passing lanes, I thought maybe they'd have a bigger impact in this game, especially when you're just dropping seven for 80, or yeah, 80% of the game, 79% of the game, you drop seven. And it just never happened. And I don't think it's like this. I know it's not like they're full because he wasn't throwing middle of the field in breakers. Yeah. It was just like all outside the number stuff. And I don't know how it's so easy to throw outside the numbers when you're like, I don't know why it was so easy for Dak. Is it an accuracy thing? Maybe he's really accurate, Dak, timing thing and anticipation. Probably. It's all that. But like he just made it look so easy. It's supposed to be harder to throw outside the numbers, but not for him in this game. The Giants were in cover four and cover three a lot. So they would vertically clear out and then open up the curl flat, put them in conflict and then and then attack that way. They were doing it a lot with Pickens and CD Lamb towards the outside. And then you had plays like in the goal line, like the one to Jake Ferguson, where Tremaine Edmonds did an excellent job working through the traffic, getting outside and tackling Jake Ferguson before he could get in the end. And now they scored like two plays late. There were a couple of plays in the goal line where DJ Reader was a stud. Reader had like five or six plays where I was like, damn, I don't know. That was Edmonds' best play of the game too. You got to see what we've been hoping for, like the speed at the second level, what it's going to mean for us. Yes. And then there were also some frustrating things. Like, look, I thought Taye Banks was sticky in coverage, but like there were two runs by Williams where I'm like, come on, man, just finish that tackle, bro. That's just a problem with this player at this point. I really should not be shocked by it at all. I love how the Giants, man, they can come out with 12 personnel and the Giants were matching in base. And dude, the Giants were just more physical too, right? Like you match with your base, which is, you know, 12%. Like that's not a surprise, but you have an, like a massive athletic advantage, I feel like, right? I think, I think Ardell recent Tremaine Edmonds allow you to be that way and you can align five guys on the line of scrimmage and still cover space on the back end. Cause if you're going to send four, you have guys who can drop into coverage and operate well enough against the Luke Schoonmakers and the Jake Ferguson's of the world. True. And I thought, generally speaking, this is the, like, be all end all for me of this game on defense was the run defense. The other run defense is pretty phenomenal in this game. We talked about it last night. 3.4 yards per carry for Gervonta. The backup team, Mercado, 3.5 yards per carry. I thought there were just bad out of hell plays from Abdul Carter. It wasn't just like watching the cut up we had of him, like bending the edge and making him. He made a big impact as a run stopper. I thought he was super aggressive, had an excellent, just overall, I call it like effort, I guess is the best way to describe him in the run game. Abdul Carter throwing his body around, getting into spots where he's making plays. The first play of the game, Nate Tice, just cut it up and put it on Twitter before we started recording today, Nick. And it was like, Abdul Carter, no matter what, said, I'm going to make a play on this first play of the game. And you watch him, he's just like ramming his body into three different guys, pinballing off of them and getting in on the tackle for a two-yard gain or a one-yard gain. I thought he was excellent against the run. There were some good and bad plays you mentioned at a cave-on. And overall speaking, Reader was excellent against the run. Edmonds, great, I thought as well. Reese, maybe not as good, but still fine. Good against the run. Like overall, this run defense looked good to me. Yeah, absolutely. I agree. And look, it didn't really bear out in the stats, I don't think. But Reader, like how many times did he stand the center up and then, I got to bounce it in another direction and the Giants. Javante did a lot with those somehow, but yeah. Yeah, Javante, like he's a good running back man. And I'm glad, we like Javante Williams coming out of UNC, suffered devastating injury with the Broncos, and now he's leveraged it into a second contract here in Dallas. And he's a damn good running back too. Hard player to tackle as well, as some of the guys found out. Do you think those runs were more just Javante being a good back and creating the maximizing when he could, or bad tackling by the Giants? I think both. OK. Yeah, I mean, the bad tackling, like Tay Banks had a few of those. Yeah, obviously, the Banks, right? Yeah. But Drew Phillips, I think, had a few, like a mis-tackle or two. He flies around. He puts himself in the positions where it's hard to make a tackle, but he gets a mis-tackle. But I'm like, I don't even know if Tyler Rubin's in the position to even come close to making a tackle. He at least altered the play. And I'm not trying to shill for Drew Phillips over here. But because I had problems with him. And dude, there were plays with Drew. And it's like, yeah, I bitching complain about some of these DPI's. There were plays where he was defensive, holding like crazy, and it wasn't called, right? Oh, yeah, dude. He's just grabbing the whole game. And he can't get his head around. It's insane, dude. Like, when we made that pick, I remember Bruegler's like, Bruegler had him as like a top 50 guy. We're like, there's a steal. And like, it just never works at corner. We never, nobody ever hits at this position. I feel like at the NFL level. Who's good at, who can play corner? Look around the league. Nobody plays this position well, with the exception of like two handfuls of players. So it's just like, I don't know what to do at this point. Cause if they bench Phillips, who even plays the slot? Like, do they trust Ardarius Washington to be a true nickel corner? Probably not. They don't really have a single guy on this roster who can play this role besides Phillips, right? Nick Jones, like that. I guess, yeah. That would be who we're like looking at probably. I mean, I think Washington could, but Washington played one snap here. I don't think that's a mistake. Yeah, I'm not sure it's a true nickel. Yeah. Yeah, no. And Drew Dude, to his credit, bro, he is good around a line of scrimmage. He's great around a line of scrimmage. He had a few players. Great. It's nice. He makes these sick plays. One of them was like the lamb end around, and it was awesome. And it was like, sick play, Phillips. This is what you do. Then they just converted the third and four on the next play. So overall, it's those long holding calls, and the constant holding, and the DPI's, and getting burned, that really makes a bigger impact on the game. But there's nothing they can do. It's just hard to find a corner at the NFL level. And look, man, Reese Nubin, Holland and Edmonds played every snap. I thought Edmonds looked good. I thought against the run, he was getting behind DJ Reader's blocks and fitting the run well. He had, I think, five stops in this game. And dude, the Giants defensively, like some of the fronts that they're employing, right? Like they'll have like a two eye and a three technique, and then they'll stack the linebackers behind them, giving these linebackers easier access and preventing offensive linemen easily accessing them up at the second level. And I think the Giants, they've been doing that all throughout the preseason. We saw it in this game as well. The Giants are also not afraid to mug up the line of scrimmage on third down to show pressure. Looks did not send a ton of pressure in this game, but there was a lot of simulated pressures as well, sending Drew Phillips and players like that in after the quarterback. I think Drew rushed four times, and Rees had like five rushes in the quarterback. That's something that I think is going to be consistent throughout the season is just a little bit unpredictability on who exactly is rushing. I would like to see Brian Burns not dropping the coverage maybe as much, and it be a little bit more varied. But I think that was an adjustment because of the way Dallas was playing Brian Burns. I think there's going to be other teams are going to play Abdul Carter the way that Dallas played Brian Burns. That's a great point though. I think you're 100 percent right. That was just a pure adjustment from Dennardwilson in-game. If they're going to allocate three resources to you every play, we're just going to drop you and screw them over. It could have and should have worked better, I feel like. But it's just DAC. I don't know what else to say. We see this every year. Year after year, we watch two games of DAC. It's the same story every time. He processes better than 99 percent of these NFL quarterbacks. We're going to get some guys that don't process soon. Not Stafford, obviously, but soon in these coming weeks, I think this pass rush will pay off for the Giants if we can get a two-score lead. I really do believe that. I know it hasn't happened yet, and we're still skeptical. Nick and I have been making bold predictions about this pass rush for 24 months at this point straight, and nothing has come to fruition. But give it a little bit more time, and let's not... If we had to play DAC every week, it's not going to work out. But we got Cam Ward and Jacoby Brissett soon. Right. Good point. We get to play Cam Ward, Jacoby Brissett. Should I even mention the name? I won't do it. But there's a guy in Indianapolis we get to play who might struggle against this pass rush. Oh, man. Yeah. Tyler Schuck as well. Like we can beat up. We can beat Schuck up. Oh, we could definitely be. I can't wait for the Schuck dart. I've just been waiting for that. Look, I'm sure our Schuck's definitely better than Dart. And I like Schuck too. Yeah, I'm a Schuck guy. I texted you on Sunday. He had a he had a throw to a lobby where I was like, dude, that outside the number boy, he has a couple of his dime balls every week. But he's still a second year player who I think the Giants could harass. He threw like two or three interceptions and well, he wasn't better than Dart this past week. No, no, no, absolutely not. Absolutely not. I'll say this, though, man, against the Rams, though, when that second, this is why the Rams match up is scary to me still, is when DJ Reader is not on the field, you know, they're just going to do it. On the third time that the Giants rolled out Akoye and Darius Alexander, Dallas was like, all right, I'm not throwing the football. I'm just going to, they did two runs and they gained 15 yards on those two runs, like a seven and an eight yard gain by Javante Williams with the Giants just did not look good up front. And Darius is like, oh, I'll get thrown around. And you know, like one of those things where he's doing a snap, like I don't know, he just looks overmatched out there. And I'll say this about what you said, the advantages to the offense, because those dudes up front dots and they're two awesome interior linemen, a villain doctor, they're not coming off the field for any snaps. They get to play a hundred percent. You got to take Reader off. He's a 60% career player. You're going to have 40% of your snaps on average over the year without Reader on the field. And those guys are still on the field and they're going to run duo up front and just pound us. Yeah. No, absolutely. Every time that second unit goes on the field, the Rams and Sean Nick Vade, they're going to be running the football. And also, dude, it's like Gattagard, Puka and Devante. I'm not trying to be pessimistic here. And I'm not worried about the Giants defense per se. Do the same thing on offense. Just control the clock the whole game. It's situational, though. It's just, I know the Giants. I just don't have faith in the Giants' depth up front, specifically against this matchup. And we saw Dallas, who is not nearly the run blocking team at the Rams, have success whenever DJ Reader wasn't on the field. And who would have thought a 32-year-old DJ Reader has become like this? Such a valuable piece. Yeah, this indispensable player for the New York Giants. And that's like one of those things that like does concern me overall, though, about the defense, right? That's not a good place to be in. The Giants have some serious issues with depth at the defensive line. If they don't figure that out. Very good point. Maybe there's something like maybe we'll be the Quinn and Williams sweepstakes team. If there's a Quinn and that breaks free the trade deadline and the Giants are four and one or something, that's a position I'll trade for. I'm not as open to the Porter and the Gonzalez's. Like, it just doesn't feel good to me to dump our future into a 200 pound player who at any point can lose confidence and just not be defending, it's a hard position to play. But you give me like a Quinn and Williams option at the trade deadline, I'm okay with that idea, like putting someone on the line of scrimmage to dominate. That's, I'm in on that if the Giants give up. I don't know if anyone is at that point at this point on the trade. Like, I wonder who some upcoming free agent defensive tackles are. I'm going to look that up real quick. Yeah, there he is. No, I'm curious as well. And I think that's an excellent, if it goes as poorly as it could. The Rams, then I think the Giants need to investigate this. Who do you have? The Forrest Buckner. He's older. It was going to be Buckees. But I've always loved his game. And I feel like the Colts defense with and without him last year was like just terrible once he got injured and then he's got a neck thing. So I don't he's 33 with a neck thing. This wouldn't be like a one. We would trade like a late thing. But I could easily see the Colts season going to shit. And then being a seller at the trade deadline for sure. I think their defense is terrible and they might be figured out on offense. We'll find that out later this year. There's not all that much else. We got our boy A'Shawn Robinson on here. We didn't want it. It's actually pretty ugly outside of Buckner. So I don't really see anything. And that also goes to show there's really not a single free agent to get interested. The Dexter sweep, the Gerben Dexter sweepstakes already happened too. Yeah. And I don't think he's even what we needed. I mean, he would have helped. He would have helped, of course. He's a 6'6, 325-pounder. I don't think he's maybe... I don't know if he's warranted the contract that he was rewarded. I'm not 100% certain. I'm grinded through his tape. But right now, it's just like... I don't want to be too pessimistic on Darius Alexander, but this has just been the steady drum beat of negativity for his ability to anchor against Double T's, right? And we've already seen the opposing offenses notice when 91's out there and then attack, you know? And I just know that's what's going to happen against the Rams as well. It's just... But Reader, holy shit, bro, so impressed with the way he played against Dallas. Well, I just got liked, maybe retweet from Isaiah Likley. I got to start tagging him in some of these tweets now after that, but yeah, that just came across my screen. But yeah, it's a bad market coming up. We're going to have to draft D tackles just so all the fans know. We're going to have to force a position, which sucked, but I'm sure the value will fall into where we can get one that we like in round one or two, hopefully at least. Yeah, man, I mean, it's a position that we wanted the Giants to invest in, which just didn't really break that way for the Giants this past draft, right? Yeah, I'm happy we didn't do it in the draft. I'll tell you that. Yeah, no, I think, I mean, dude, you got to play. No spots I would have preferred it. Yeah, you got to play the way that it is kind of thing. The hood thing would have been interesting. Who was the detacker we wanted over hood? Well, McDonald went, I think, before the Giants. We just missed McDonald. They traded up. Yeah. Yeah, it would have been nice to have McDonald right now on this roster. Yeah, it would have been, but it's not the case. No, not but overall, man, I'm excited to see what they could do against the Rams. This was a strange game for the defense, not because they played poorly, it's just because the Dallas only had 58 plays. Two drives at the end of that game, you know what I mean? Like the Giants just controlled the clock. You don't see that, two drives in the second half. What the hell, bro? You never see what we saw. It's pretty phenomenal. The Giants totally won this game by controlling the clock and their defense didn't even play good in the second half. Let's be honest. They had two possessions and gave them a touchdown on both, including one that was only two minutes long and almost cost them the game. They allowed one so fast. Again, there's a lot of penalties too. That's part of it. They didn't really give up plays, which is all penalties. But, like, I mean, like, if they were kind of penalties, like, I don't know what to say. Like, you can't just grab these guys. They're just there's no, like, solution. These corners have no solution. Again, like some of them were ticky tacky. I agree with that. But they're putting them the players who were penalized are putting themselves into a position to be penalized by executing poor technique. And look, they're they're going up against Devante and Puka next week. It's not that much better than what you just saw, right? Like, I would say that Pickens and Lamb might be the who's the best duo? Is it Pickens and Lamb or Chase Chase and Higgins? Because those are like the two that I think I don't really put Puka and Devante at Devante's stage right now. Puka might be the best receiver in the league, though. He's up there. Yeah, I think I would take, personally, I would take Pickens and Lamb. I'm just so high on Pickens' game, personally. We've always been a big Pickens podcast, specifically you, specifically you. I have my concerns about his character, and I still do. His character sucks, but it's working out now. He's a stud. I still love his draft video. I still watch it sometimes. It's so funny, man. It's like, what the hell is that guy doing? His posture. He won me so much money last year. I think I drafted him in all but one fantasy league. His price was like 14. What was he, like the seventh round or something like that? He was going in? It moved up to like, the hype got him up to like round five or four at some point, but it was just printing money if you took him anywhere after round one. I had him in a few leagues as well. Now, Pickens is a stud. Such a stud. I don't know, again, not to turn this into a Cowboys podcast, but what receivers are similar to George Pickens? Like, historically, you know, just like- Oh, historically, it's like AJ Green. That's it. And I think Pickens is still stronger than AJ Green. Not as fast, but stronger. No, I think AJ Green is more maybe- I don't know, man. That's who he reminds me the most of by far. Is AJ Green as big as Pickens? I don't think so. Yeah, he was like 6'4. Oh, he was. I loved AJ Green, too. That's who he reminds- his game reminds me the most of, though, by far, AJ Green. I'm trying to see just to make sure I was right about that height. Yeah, he was 6'4. Yeah, 6'4, 207. I feel like Pickens is like 220, though. Am I bugging there? No, I don't think so. I think- I'm curious now. But I don't- I think he was- no, 205. Oh, he seems bigger. Yeah. No, 6'3, 205. It's just how smooth he is with his- Yeah, it's the smoothness. It's the same AJ Green smoothness. Yeah. That's a great call by you, bud. Let's do some superlatives. Let's get into some soupies. Yeah. On Harold and Player. Okay. I went with Tremaine Edmonds here. We talked about him earlier, but this is the guy who I watched the tape and I'm like, I've been waiting for linebackers to play good at the second level for the Giants. It didn't show up in the box score. We didn't make a crazy big play, but except for that one by the goal line on Gervonta, it was a great play that we would have never made last year with O'Carra Caram, who was out on the field. O'Carra did well for the Carolina Panthers though. I saw that, but it's coming. It's coming for Tremaine Edmonds and he was my unheralded player. Yeah. For me, I have two players and the one I'm not going to go with, but it's just because I've seen, I don't want to say it's slander, I've seen people just asking or inquiring about Brian Burns and where he was. Had Brian Burns, I still think he had a good game. He just didn't really bear out the stats. But I had Chauncey Goldstone. I thought Goldstone played really well in his 27 or 28 snaps. Highest effort player and best overall player are the same for me. Oh yeah, it's Abdul Carter, right? Yeah. Yeah, I assumed it. They're the same for me as well. I considered Reader for best player, just because he was so good in this game. So did I. I feel like it has to be Carter, but Reader made a big impact in this game on defense. Early on too, first play of the game, he just took the center and put him right in the back. Yeah, awesome. You look, it's like, oh, he didn't have any stops or anything. You look at his stats, it's like, dude, no. Watch him just mess up the rushing attacks of Dallas, man. And just putting bodies in the lane of Javante was... One of my favorite plays, though, was the play I mentioned a little earlier, was when Jake Ferguson tried to scoop block Abdul Carter, and Abdul Carter threw him into Javante Williams, and then Javante Williams took Jake Ferguson and stiffed armed him to the ground. I know. It's crazy. I think the Nate Tice just tweeted about that, and I was like, this was a rough... I think, what did he say? Nate Tice is the man. I love his stuff. He said, fuck, where is this? It's not showing up on my Twitter now. I thought I literally just retweeted. So I'm like, this was a rough go for Jake Ferguson. I tweeted something similar. I was just like, this tight end had a bad day, or something like that. This tight end wants to forget about today. Or Jake. Who's the player you expected? Yeah, go ahead. Jake is a Big Blue Banter favorite coming out of Wisconsin. Of course. Of course, he has been. He's done great on his fourth round draft capital, by the way. Leverage it into a second contract. Yeah. And a good player, a solid player. All right. A player you expect to see more from. Yeah, Darius Alexander, dude. I can't expect much from him. I'm going to go. There's three ways I can go about this. One, Arvo Reiss. Not that I thought he played that bad of a game. I just personally expect him to come out the gate and be just an awesome impact player. Holy crap, this guy is making play after play after play. We didn't get that just yet. The second one for me is Nubin. You talked about it. We talked about it a little on the pod. Look, when you're dropping 7, 80% of the plays, I need some of these DBs to make some freaking plays on the ball occasionally. So I have Nubin and Newsome, a three-way tie for those guys. Just like no plays on the ball from the corners, really, besides Holland's interception. Just kind of lame for me there. It is what it is. It's a tough position to play and it's a tough opponent. But hopefully it will get better there. What is the best pass rushing grade for you, one through ten? Okay. I went 4-0 because I felt like Carter had some really good pass rush reps and Kavon had one or two that I like. Burn had one or two that I like. I just felt like they weren't really blitzing like we saw. Again, it was just 21% blitz rate and Cowboys were just protecting with a lot of guys. So it was like one of those games. So, I don't know, what did you go for run defense? 7-8, I felt like the run defense was really good in this game. There were a few like missed tackles and just few like lack of contain, but it was usually off of the like second or third bounce, right? Like it wasn't like there were a lot of plays where the Giants weren't in position initially, right? Like, so it's like the Giants are flowing to constrict everything is in and then Gervonta makes a play, bounces outside, Taye Banks misses the tackle, Drew Philips misses the tackle. There were plays like that that pissed me off, but the initial part of the run defense was intact, and that was not the case last year. Last year, the initial part of the run was ass, the linebacker didn't fit, and then Tyler Newbon was chasing Saquon Barkley for 60 yards and everyone's making fun of him because he's slow and can't catch up to him. Like, that wasn't the case in this game, so I give him a good 7-8, but it wasn't perfect. Yeah, I went 8-4. To me, I think you made a good case as to why I probably should have a little lower on him, but I just wasn't expecting this in the first game. I was not expecting the Giants, even without Tyler Smith. I wasn't expecting them to hold up against the Cowboys all and they did. So I was pretty impressed. I'm pretty enthusiastic about where this runs, the events might be headed. And as far as the past events goes, I'm just waiting for easier quarterback matchups and receiver matchups. It just is what it is. Like, and we're going to get them. So like, I know I can look forward to them. Even a team like, go ahead. What are you going to say? Oh, no, no, no, I was just like, we were going to be over the moon, ecstatic to steal one of these games. The Giants already have one of them. And I don't think it's crazy that you could beat the Rams, too. So it's like either. I don't necessarily think I needed them. I wasn't in that mindset. I said I was in the minds they have to win one of these two games for me was my mindset more so. And if I could pick one, it would have been Dallas. So it's like I'm already now feel like we're playing with house money. Isn't that what I said? Or did I say something differently? I think you said if they had won one ecstatic, if they won one of these two games, I meant it more like they have to win one of the two. So now that they won the one already, now I'm with house money. But if they lost this, I would have felt nervous. That's what I. Yeah, that's what I meant. Yeah, I just didn't. I didn't interpret that the right way. Yeah, no, no, no. But that's like it's an excellent place to be. And now I'm also heading into week two thinking like, dude, the Giants could also steal this one, too. Like this isn't it's not a crazy thing to think. I think it's going to be a very tough match up. I think the Rams are going to be dialed in. But at the Rams, you just lost your start. I think they're a little deflated right now. And they're also traveling back from freaking down under. So it's completely agree. Ready to feel energized and in control again? At Orderly Meds, we have helped thousands just like you take charge of their health with a GLP-1. And if we somehow, if the Giants somehow start doing, oh, then it's, oh, you know, this is it. It's going to take off at that point, but we have to keep it rained in and understand. I know you know this, but like we all have to understand that like two games doesn't define a season. They got to play consistently for a long period of time to make it where we want to. But I will say this, we're talking about easier quarterback and passing game matchups. There's one I circle on my schedule. I got to watch the tape. Jacob watched it. Jacob was not impressed with this Eagles offense in week one. And I look at that on paper and I'm like, really? The Washington commander shit defense. Like I get it. They signed, they drafted Sonny Styles, but there's not that much talent on that commander's defense. And they just just kind of had their way with the Eagles yesterday. The Eagles had 84 of Saquon Barkley's 83 rushing guards came after contact yesterday. Do you know how bad that is? And I talked to a couple of my friends that are Big Eagles fans today. They're like, Dickerson was horrible in this game. I don't think he's healthy at all. This was apparently Lane Johnson's worst game of his career. Cole, the center they have. Terrible. Not playing good football right now. Like they're O-line doesn't have Jeff Stoutland. And we may get a, you know, I have I'll just be honest with the listeners. I don't have much respect for Jalen Hurts game, to be honest. He was amazing in those two goals. And he's still great outside the numbers throw over the top. He can, you know, see a one-on-one and lob it, you know, Russell Wilson, a ball out there, but like he doesn't really move in offense very well and consistently. And I don't really think that's even like controversial. I'm starting to feel like we might have a shot to win this division. I'm just going to put that out there right now. Cause that's how I feel. Cause that's how I feel. Cause I don't think this Eagles team is moving in the right direction. Dude, I don't think that's crazy. I think Dallas is going to stabilize. And the Giants still defensively, it's crazy how I still have my concerns. But it's not the craziest thing in the world. The Giants really just, big deed, big day. Yeah, they won that game outright. They were the better team, clearly. By far, they were the better team as my phone drops to the ground and probably smashes the face. Won't be the first time.
